Effects of Laser Powers on Microstructures and Mechanical Properties of Al0.5FeCoCrNi High-Entropy Alloys Fabricated by Laser Melting Deposition

Xuesong Zhang et al.

Summary: High-entropy alloys (HEAs) offer great potential for various applications, but achieving the ideal combination of tensile strength and ductility remains challenging. This study used laser melting deposition (LMD) technology to fabricate Al0.5FeCoCrNi walls with different laser powers. The results showed that increasing laser power led to a decrease in tensile strength and an increase in ductility. Additionally, quantitative calculations revealed that grain boundary strengthening and dislocation strengthening were the two main forms of strengthening for the walls.

Summary: Short-range order (SRO) strengthening in alloys is attributed to increased resistance to dislocation slip caused by breaking favorable bonds. This study focuses on the dissipated energy due to the formation of a diffuse antiphase boundary (APB), showing that SRO strengthening is important in defining the friction stress on gliding dislocations.

Summary: Hot-forging significantly increases the strength of the HEA but reduces the fracture elongation. Subsequent annealing after forging decreases the strength but improves the elongation by reducing dislocation density, coarsening recrystallized grains, and decreasing the number of annealing twins. Different microstructure features before the tensile test lead to various softening mechanisms and diverse mechanical behaviors during the tensile deformation.
