Effects of TiC0.4 on microstructure and properties of TiAl matrix composites

Spark plasma sintering was used to prepare TiAl matrix composites with different TiC0.4 content. The microstructure, mechanical properties, and tribological properties of these composites were systematically investigated. The results showed that the density, hardness, and compressive strength of the composites increased with increasing TiC0.4 content. The TiAl matrix composites with 10 wt% Ti3SiC2 and 15 wt% TiC0.4 exhibited the best tribological properties.
TiAl matrix composites with different TiC0.4 content were prepared by spark plasma sintering. The micro-structure, mechanical properties and tribological properties of TiAl matrix composites with different TiC0.4 content and Ti3SiC2 were studied systematically. The results showed that the density, hardness and compressive strength of the composites increase with the increase of TiC0.4 content. The density of the material was 3.98-4.00 g/cm3, the hardness was 4.3-5.1 GPa, and the compressive strength was 757-890 MPa. The tribo-logical behavior and mechanical properties at room temperature (RT) and 500 degrees C were investigated, and the wear mechanism was discussed. TiAl matrix composites with 10 wt% Ti3SiC2 and 15 wt% TiC0.4 have the best tribological properties. The friction coefficients at RT and 550 degrees C were 0.500 and 0.474 respectively, and the wear rates were 0.12 mg center dot m 1 and 0.017 mg center dot m 1, respectively. In RT, the small groove formed by the wear between the hard particles of TiAl matrix composites and the friction surface in the friction process. The Ti2AlC formed by the addition of TiC0.4 plays the role of wear resistance.
