Dynamic polymer network conductive Nanocomposites: Low percolation threshold and Joule-heating-induced network plasticity

Zhen Sang et al.

Summary: Diels-Alder-based polymer (DAP) dynamic networks have shown unique properties such as fast temperature-triggered solid-liquid transitions and solid-state network plasticity, making them ideal for applications such as printing, self-healing, and shape morphing. In this study, highly electrically conductive nanocomposites were produced by loading a DAP network with branched multi-walled carbon nanotubes (bCNTs). The nanocomposites have a remarkably low percolation threshold and can undergo controlled network plasticity through Joule-heating-induced bond exchange. The excellent dispersion of the fillers is achieved by the ability of DAPs to deconstruct into low-viscosity components upon heating, enabling effective wetting and infiltration of the bCNTs. The dispersed fillers are further stabilized by covalent bonds between the DAP matrix and bCNTs. Upon cooling, the solid-state click Diels-Alder reaction rapidly reforms a crosslinked network, locking the well-dispersed bCNTs. The nanocomposites can be easily 3D printed in multi-material, self-adhering hybrid constructs, exhibiting tunable mechanical and electrical properties. Dynamic bond exchange can be selectively triggered at different locations in these hybrid constructs, allowing spatiotemporal control of the material's permanent shape governed by network plasticity.

3D printing of ABS Nanocomposites. Comparison of processing and effects of multi-wall and single-wall carbon nanotubes on thermal, mechanical and electrical properties

Sithiprumnea Dul et al.

Summary: This paper reports on a comparative study of the effects of two types of carbon nanotubes on the properties of 3D-printed parts. The study found that the tensile properties and softening temperature of the 3D-printed parts were enhanced with increasing carbon nanotube content. Single-wall carbon nanotubes and multiwall carbon nanotubes had different effects on the properties of the 3D-printed parts, but both could be used for the production and application of thermoelectric devices and flexible circuits.

3D-printing of segregated carbon nanotube/polylactic acid composite with enhanced electromagnetic interference shielding and mechanical performance

Yan Wang et al.

Summary: The use of 3D-printed segregated carbon nanotube/polylactic acid composite has shown to enhance both mechanical properties and electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness. The interconnected conductive network formed by CNTs on the 3D-printed PLA scaffold significantly improves the EMI SE of the composite to 67.0 dB. Additionally, the highly continuous structure of the 3D-printed PLA scaffold contributes to the mechanical robustness of the composite, leading to higher bending strength and Young's modulus compared to conventional CNT/PLA composites.
