Excellent soft magnetic properties in Co-based amorphous alloys after heat treatment at temperatures near the crystallization onset

M. G. Nematov et al.

Summary: The effect of heat treatment near the crystallization onset on Co-based amorphous microwires was investigated for micromagnetic structure, magnetostriction, and magnetoimpedance. The hysteresis loops of the microwires changed shape as the annealing temperature approached the crystallization temperature, producing unique magnetic properties. The formation of an easy anisotropy direction was confirmed, and the origin of this anisotropy was found to be different from that induced by current annealing below the Curie temperature.

Effect of grain refinement on cutting force of difficult-to-cut metals in ultra-precision machining

Renjie Ji et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of surface grain refinement on cutting force in nickel-based superalloy Inconel 718 treated with Coupled Ultrasonic and Electric Pulse Treatment (CUEPT). Experimental results demonstrate that the cutting force increases with decreasing surface grain size. A mathematical model is established to describe the relationship between grain size and cutting force, and the calculated results are in good agreement with the experimental results. The increase in cutting force after grain refinement is attributed to the improved stability of grain boundaries and increased number of grain boundaries.

Generation mechanism and dual-dynamics simulation of surface patterns in single-point diamond turning of single-crystal copper

Guoqing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the generation mechanism of fan-shaped patterns during single-point diamond turning (SPDT) of single-crystal copper. Both theoretical and experimental analyses were conducted to study the fan-shaped patterns, surface quality, cutting force, and chip morphology on different crystal planes of single-crystal copper. The research reveals that fluctuations in the friction coefficient caused by the different atom density arrangement directions and the main cutting direction result in the vibration of the cutting system and the generation of fan-shaped patterns. The SPDT of crystal plane (100) achieves the best surface quality. This study provides a fundamental understanding of fan-shaped pattern formation on the machined surface and offers insights for improving the surface quality in machining of single-crystal copper.

Gas tungsten arc welding of as-cast AlCoCrFeNi2.1 eutectic high entropy alloy

Jiajia Shen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the gas tungsten arc welding of an as-cast AlCoCrFeNi2.1 alloy and analyzed the microstructural evolution and strength distribution of the welded joints. The results showed that the weld thermal cycle caused variations in the relative volume fractions of the FCC + B2 BCC eutectic structure across the joint. BCC nanoprecipitates in the base material dissolved into the matrix in the heat affected zone and closer to the fusion zone boundary. The fusion zone exhibited grain refinement and increased hardness compared to the as-cast base material. The joints demonstrated a good balance of strength and ductility with failure occurring in the base material. This study establishes the potential for using arc-based welding for joining eutectic high entropy alloys.

Effect of cold metal transfer mode on the microstructure and machinability of Ti-6Al-4V alloy fabricated by wire and arc additive manufacturing in ultra-precision machining

Jian Gou et al.

Summary: The effect of cold metal transfer (CMT) mode on ultra-precision machining (UPM) was studied to investigate its impact on phase transformation and surface integrity improvements for a wire and arc additive manufactured (WAAMed) Ti-6Al-4V alloy part. Both CMT and CMT thorn Pulse (CMT thorn P) modes were considered, with CMT thorn P mode having higher heat input. Phase transformation occurred in the reheated conditions of the CMT thorn P mode, resulting in changes in the number and size of different phases. UPM showed that cutting force increased with cutting speed, and specimens fabricated in CMT mode had slightly larger cutting forces and better surface quality.
