Additive manufacturing of biomimetic Titanium-Tantalum lattices for biomedical implant applications

Nicolas Soro et al.

Summary: In this study, 3D lattices designed with gyroid, diamond, and Schwarz primitive minimal surfaces are fabricated using laser powder-bed fusion and a blend of titanium-tantalum powder. The processability, compressive mechanical properties, and in vitro biological properties of the dense and lattice samples are evaluated. The results show that the Ti-25Ta lattices exhibit higher ductility and absence of toxic elements compared to the conventional Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The designs also demonstrate advantageous mechanical properties and higher elastic admissible strains for bone implants compared to conventional lattices.

Mechanical and biological properties of enhanced porous scaffolds based on triply periodic minimal surfaces

Sijia Zou et al.

Summary: An enhanced porous scaffold based on triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMS) is proposed and manufactured using laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). The scaffold features smooth surfaces, controllable pores, and excellent mechanical properties. Experimental results demonstrate that the enhanced porous scaffold meets the requirements of human bones in terms of elastic modulus, compressive strength, and permeability. It also exhibits good biocompatibility.

Chrysoula Ioannidou et al.

Summary: Additive Manufacturing (AM), including Laser-Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF), Electron beam-Powder Bed Fusion (E-PBF), and Directed Energy Deposition (DED), is a significant technology for manufacturing metallic materials. In-situ synchrotron X-ray characterization is a suitable tool for understanding the microstructure evolution during these processes. This article provides an overview of the research on metal PBF and DED using in-situ synchrotron X-ray imaging, diffraction, and small-angle scattering, highlighting the state of the art, instrumentation, challenges, and knowledge gaps.

Mechanical Characteristics of Superimposed 316L Lattice Structures under Static and Dynamic Loading

Chao Chang et al.

Summary: Additive manufacturing of stainless steel 316 L lattice structures using selective laser melting shows potential for energy absorption in engineering applications. Experimental testing and numerical simulations demonstrate that the vertical truss in the lattice plays a critical role in compression, leading to superior energy absorption capacity in superimposed structures compared to other lattice designs. This research provides new insights for the design of lattice structures in various engineering applications.

Multiscale investigation of the influence of geometrical imperfections, porosity, and size-dependent features on mechanical behavior of additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V lattice struts

Atikom Sombatmai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of five different defects on a single strut, with undersizing/oversizing being the primary factor affecting the discrepancy between experiments and numerical predictions. Diameter variation and offset of the cross section were dominant for small struts, while the presence of voids had a negligible impact on elastic and initial yielding responses. Geometrical inaccuracies and varied properties had comparable effects, with the former being more dominant in smaller samples. The sensitivity from the mCT voxel size affected both global behaviors and localization.

Evaluation of the dynamic response of triply periodic minimal surfaces subjected to high strain-rate compression

Sara AlMahri et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanical properties of cellular structures based on five different TPMS sheet-based designs under quasi-static and dynamic loading conditions. Results show that all structures exhibited enhanced mechanical performance under dynamic loading, with the Diamond structure demonstrating the highest specific energy absorption value. This suggests that TPMS structures could be promising candidates for applications involving high strain-rate loading.

Compressive behavior of selective laser melting printed Gyroid structures under dynamic loading

Xue Li et al.

Summary: The compressive behavior of Gyroid structures fabricated by SLM under different loading rates was investigated experimentally and numerically. The deformation process was recorded using DIC method, and loading rate sensitivities of yield stress, plateau stress, and specific energy absorption were discussed. Numerical simulations revealed deformation mechanisms and relative density-stress relationships, showing that Gyroid structures exhibit superior energy absorption abilities compared to other cellular materials, with potential applications in protective structures under compression.

The effect of build direction and geometric optimization in laser powder bed fusion of Inconel 718 structures with internal channels

Galina Kasperovich et al.

Summary: A laser powder bed fusion strategy was developed to manufacture small channels with high dimensional accuracy in Inconel 718 structures. By optimizing the contour parameters and cross-section shape systematically, significant improvement in dimensional accuracy was achieved. Surface quality of external and internal surfaces were investigated, resulting in the best properties for inclinations below 45 degrees.
