Microplastics pollution in sediments of Moroccan urban beaches: The Taghazout coast as a case study

Mohamed Ben-Haddad et al.

Summary: This work presents a spatiotemporal analysis of microplastics pollution in sediments from a highly urbanized beach in Taghazout coast, Morocco. The study reveals the variation of microplastics pollution across different sites and years. The results suggest the implementation of plastic management strategies to minimize the impact of microplastics pollution in sediments of urbanized beaches.

Residues of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in waters of the Ili-Balkhash Basin, arid Central Asia: Concentrations and risk assessment

Beibei Shen et al.

Summary: The study found relatively low concentrations of OCPs and PAHs in arid regions, with sources including agricultural, industrial, and domestic activities. Different sites showed varying primary sources of PAHs, including oil leakage, biomass burning, coal combustion, and petroleum-powered vehicles. Contaminated headwater areas suggest long-range transport as a significant mechanism for pollutant distribution.

Occurrence of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in marine plastic litter from coastal areas of Central Chile

Victoria Gomez et al.

Summary: PFASs were found in marine plastic litter on six beaches in central Chile, with the highest abundance recorded at the mouth of the Biobio River. The study highlights the need for further investigation into the occurrence of chemicals in marine plastic litter to reduce their environmental impact, and calls for improved coastal management strategies to eliminate solid waste along the country's coast.

Paint particles in the marine environment: An overlooked component of microplastics

Andrew Turner

Summary: This paper critically examines the physico-chemical properties, sources, distributions, behavior, and toxicity of paint particles in the marine environment, highlighting the differences between paint particles and microplastics as well as their high chemical toxicity compared to similarly-sized synthetic debris. It also provides recommendations for greater use of particulate capturing devices, waste collection systems, and recycling facilities during paint disturbance, raising awareness of the impacts of discarded paint, and alerting the microplastic community to the significance of paint particles in environmental samples.
