Chronic Oil Pollution from Vessels and Its Role in Background Pollution in the Southeastern Baltic Sea

Elena Krek et al.

Summary: The study found that in the southeastern Baltic Sea, oil pollution events are mainly concentrated along major shipping routes, with a seasonal decrease in the number of oil pollution events during the autumn-winter period, while the seasonal variation in oil product concentration shows a peak in April and a minimum in July. Over the years, there has been a decrease in the detection of oil pollution events in the entire Baltic Sea region.

Spatial and temporal assessment of oil spills in the Mediterranean Sea

Semion Polinov et al.

Summary: Ship-generated oil pollution poses a significant threat to the Mediterranean Sea. An analysis of oil spills using three different databases revealed variations in spill densities. At the Exclusive Economic Zone level, oil spill densities were found to be positively correlated with shipping and port activity. Therefore, there is a need to develop an integrated database for more efficient prevention and response to oil spills.

An Open Source Approach for Near-Real Time Mapping of Oil Spills along the Mediterranean Coast of Egypt

Islam Abou El-Magd et al.

Summary: Oil pollution is a major threat to Egypt's marine environment, particularly near the Suez Canal and Port Said, due to heavy shipping traffic and oil production. This study developed an open-source model using Sentinel-1 SAR data to monitor oil pollution in real-time, detecting approximately 218 pollution cases between 2014 and 2020, with a concentration near the entrance of Suez Canal and city of Port Said.

Disruptions and resilience in global container shipping and ports: the COVID-19 pandemic versus the 2008-2009 financial crisis

Theo Notteboom et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the temporal and spatial sequences of the supply and demand shocks of COVID-19 on container ports and the container shipping industry by comparing these events to the 2008-2009 financial crisis. The study analyzes short-term impacts, differences, reasons for variations, and strategic behavior of market players, revealing different adaptation mechanisms and outcomes between the financial crisis and COVID-19. The impacts of external shocks like COVID-19 are determined by the integration of ports and the shipping industry within complex supply chains.
