Spatial patterns and distributional controls of total and methylated mercury off the Lena River in the Laptev Sea sediments

Van Liem-Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study presents data on total mercury (HgT) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in Laptev Sea surface sediments along a cross-shelf transect, showing that the highest concentrations of HgT and MeHg are observed close to the river delta. The spatial distribution of Hg and MeHg is suggested to be influenced by hydrodynamic sorting of riverine-derived material, with MeHg likely trapped in sediments close to the river delta before being degraded in the water column.

Summary: It has been found that in addition to the previously discussed processes affecting the chemical composition of bottom sediments, there are also several mainly local processes developed on the East Siberian shelf.

Assessment of mercury levels in modern sediments of the East Siberian Sea

Kirill I. Aksentov et al.

Summary: Mercury (Hg) is an important environmental indicator of anthropogenic pollution, with an average content of 36 ppb in the bottom sediments of the East Siberian Sea. The accumulation of Hg in the bottom sediments in the eastern part has increased over the past 150 years due to global emissions of anthropogenic Hg, as well as changes in hydrology and primary production causing plankton to enter the sediments, thought to be associated with global warming.

Mercury in Sediment Core Samples From Deep Siberian Ice-Rich Permafrost

Clara Rutkowski et al.

Summary: The study determined mercury concentrations in deep permafrost in Siberia, finding elevated levels of mercury. With Arctic warming, the release of mercury from deep permafrost could have significant implications for the Arctic ecosystem.
