Glacial landforms reveal dynamic ice-sheet behaviour along the mid-Norwegian margin during the last glacial-deglacial cycle

Dag Ottesen et al.

Summary: The analysis of glacial landforms on continental margins provides insights into sedimentation processes beneath ice sheets and aids predictions of future ice sheet resilience. This study used high-resolution marine-geophysical data to map and interpret glacial landforms along the mid-Norwegian margin, revealing the dynamic behavior of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet during the last glacial-interglacial cycle. The geometry of the continental shelf played a key role in controlling the pattern of ice-sheet retreat.

The extreme yet transient nature of glacial erosion

H. Patton et al.

Summary: This study examines glacial erosion and its environmental controls using geophysical data and modeling of the Eurasian Ice Sheet. The results show significant spatial and temporal heterogeneity in subglacial erosion, with basal thermodynamics regulating the erosion process. The study highlights the profound geological legacy of glacial erosion.

A new stratigraphic framework for the Miocene - Lower Pliocene deposits offshore Scandinavia: A multiscale approach

Karen Dybkjaer et al.

Summary: The study presents an updated stratigraphic subdivision of the Oligocene to Pleistocene succession in the Norwegian Sea area, based on the newly proposed type well for the Molo Formation and additional data from Danish North Sea wells. The stratigraphy is composed of five sedimentary units separated by hiati, with dating based on correlation to the more complete Neogene succession in the Danish central North Sea area. The study establishes a robust stratigraphic framework of these units, based on a combination of dinocyst stratigraphy and seismic data.

Impact of bottom currents on deep water sedimentary processes of Canada Basin, Arctic Ocean

David C. Mosher et al.

Summary: The Canada Basin Abyssal Plain in the Arctic Ocean appears flat and featureless, but is influenced by deep ocean geostrophic currents. Features near the Alaska-Beaufort margin suggest a mixed system affected by cyclonic flowing geostrophic currents, likely formed during glaciations and lower sea level stands.

The elusive continental rise: Insights from residual bathymetry analysis of the Northwest Atlantic margin

D. C. Mosher et al.

Summary: The morphology of divergent continental margins is shaped by rift processes, the interaction of oceanic, continental, and transitional crust, and sedimentary processes. Classifying margin components into shelf, slope, rise, and abyssal plain segments can be challenging due to complex geomorphologies. This study aims to develop a methodology to better identify and understand the rise component.

Cenozoic uplift and erosion of the Norwegian Barents Shelf-A review

Amando P. E. Lasabuda et al.

Summary: The study presents the current status of Cenozoic uplift and erosion on the Norwegian Barents Shelf by reviewing key terminology, tectonic history, paleoenvironment, methods in quantifying uplift and erosion, timing, and possible mechanisms. The new erosion maps show an increase in net erosion to the north and northeast, reflecting key concepts including tectonic and processes such as magmatic and glacial. Discrepancies in net erosion estimates from different methods are around 500m, highlighting the need for further research in this area.

Siliciclastic and bioclastic contouritic sands: Textural and geochemical characterisation

S. de Castro et al.

Summary: This study aims to differentiate and characterise contouritic sands in two different locations with variable sediment compositions, using a multiproxy approach. The results reveal distinct sedimentary characteristics in the upper continental slope of the Mozambican margin and the Pianosa ridge, with siliciclastic sandy contourites dominating the former and bioclastic sandy and muddy contourites dominating the latter. The integration of sedimentological analyses and PCA facilitates the differentiation of these contourite deposits, highlighting the importance of reworking and winnowing in shaping deep-marine sedimentary environments.

Contourite and mixed turbidite-contourite systems in the Mozambique Channel (SW Indian Ocean): Link between geometry, sediment characteristics and modelled bottom currents

Elda Miramontes et al.

Summary: Oceanic currents in the Mozambique Channel have been shown to significantly impact the seafloor morphology and sedimentary characteristics, with multiple erosional and depositional features identified. Modelled bottom currents exhibit high variability, suggesting episodic intense circulation rather than a constant flow. The study also revealed three types of mixed turbidite-contourite systems and proposed a simplified classification of contourites worldwide.

Latitudinal variability in the Quaternary development of the Eurasian ice sheets-Evidence from the marine domain

Berit Oline Hjelstuen et al.

Summary: By compiling data on sediment volumes, sedimentation rates, and chronology of Quaternary sediment packages along the entire marine margin of the Eurasian ice sheets, the development of the Eurasian ice sheets can be divided into three phases. The data suggests that at the beginning of the Quaternary, sedimentation rates increased significantly, and the Kara-Barents Sea-Svalbard Ice Sheet was already quite large.
