Immunological effects ofChondrus armatuscarrageenans and their low molecular weight degradation products

Eduardas Cicinskas et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of high molecular weight kappa- and lambda-carrageenans and their low molecular weight degradation products on murine peritoneal macrophages in both in vitro and in vivo conditions. The results showed suppression of phagocytic activity of macrophages, indicating the potential pharmacological activity of these substances. Further research is needed to explore their effects and mechanisms.

Cancer statistics for the year 2020: An overview

Jacques Ferlay et al.

Summary: The study briefly reviews the methods and data sources used in compiling the IARC GLOBOCAN cancer statistics for 2020 and summarizes the main results. It estimated that there were nearly 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10 million cancer deaths worldwide in 2020, with the most commonly diagnosed cancers being female breast cancer and lung cancer, and the most common causes of cancer death being lung cancer and liver cancer.

Ultrasound-assisted depolymerization of kappa-carrageenan and characterization of degradation product

Mariel G. Tecson et al.

Summary: The study explored the effects of varying ultrasonic conditions on the molecular weight and structural changes of x-carrageenan, finding that low concentration, high amplitude, and long treatment time could produce degraded products with lower molecular weight. Structural analysis showed that most peaks of the raw x-carrageenan were retained, with NMR analysis revealing the cleavage of the sulfate group at the G4S-4 position in the degraded product.
