First occurrence of tetrodotoxins in bivalve mollusks from Northern Adriatic Sea (Italy)

Paola Bordin et al.

Summary: Tetrodotoxins are a potent neurotoxin with potentially fatal effects if ingested by humans. Recently, significant amounts of tetrodotoxins were detected in mussels collected in a specific area of the Northern Adriatic Sea in Italy, with the highest concentration ever found in mollusks in Europe.

Tetrodotoxins in French Bivalve Mollusks-Analytical Methodology, Environmental Dynamics and Screening of Bacterial Strain Collections

Damien Reveillon et al.

Summary: Tetrodotoxins have been identified in European shellfish at relatively low levels, with a lack of sufficient data on occurrence. Studies on shellfish and bacterial strains found no TTX analog in bacteria, despite its presence in shellfish. Survey of bivalves in French production areas revealed fluctuating concentrations of TTX, confirming the complexity of the link between bacteria, bivalves, and TTX.

The role of toxic planocerid flatworm larvae on tetrodotoxin accumulation in marine bivalves

Summary: This study found accumulation of TTX in several bivalve species collected from the northern Pacific side of Japan, suggesting that the source of the toxin may be toxic flatworm larvae.

Tetrodotoxins (TTXs) and Vibrio alginolyticus in Mussels from Central Adriatic Sea (Italy): Are They Closely Related?

Simone Bacchiocchi et al.

Summary: Tetrodotoxins (TTXs) have raised concerns in Europe in recent years, prompting the European Food Safety Authority to set recommended thresholds for TTX in mollusks and call for data collection to conduct a more comprehensive risk assessment. A study in the Marche region of Italy assessed TTX levels in mussels harvested in 2018-2019, as well as the presence of Vibrio spp. carrying genes associated with TTX biosynthesis. The study found some mussels contaminated with TTXs, but further investigation is needed to determine the potential threat of TTXs in the region.
