Mitigation of streptozotocin-induced alterations by natural agents via upregulation of PDX1 and Ins1 genes in male rats

Nagwa Ibrahim Shehata et al.

Summary: Diabetes is a globally prevalent endocrine disorder, and herbal medicine for diabetes mitigation has gained increasing interest. This study evaluated the effects of avocado and cinnamon extracts on gene expression in diabetic rats and found that these extracts improved blood glucose, insulin, lipid profile, and antioxidant capacity, and upregulated pancreatic gene expression. However, the effects of metformin, a standard drug, were more pronounced.

Syzygium jambos extract mitigates pancreatic oxidative stress, inflammation and apoptosis and modulates hepatic IRS-2/AKT/GLUT4 signaling pathway in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats

Mona F. Mahmoud et al.

Summary: The study tested the protective effect of Syzygium jambos (SJ) bark extract against streptozotocin-induced diabetes in rats and found that the extract can reduce hyperglycemia by activating endogenous antioxidants, increasing insulin production, and suppressing inflammation and apoptosis. This therapeutic effect may be attributed to the presence of 10 secondary metabolites identified by LC-MS.

ι-Carrageenan Tetrasaccharide from ι-Carrageenan Inhibits Islet β Cell Apoptosis Via the Upregulation of GLP-1 to Inhibit the Mitochondrial Apoptosis Pathway

Yanqi Li et al.

Summary: Research suggests that iota CTs can alleviate insulin resistance caused by a high-fat and high-sucrose diet through multiple pathways, including reducing blood glucose levels, enhancing glucose tolerance, decreasing beta cell apoptosis, and promoting insulin secretion. Additionally, iota CTs increase GLP-1 levels by regulating bile acid levels, which contributes to the inhibition of beta cell apoptosis.

Summary: Global estimates for incident and prevalent cases of type 1 diabetes in 2017 were found to be 234,710 and 9,004,610 respectively, with high-income countries accounting for a significant portion. Asia had the largest number of cases, reflecting its population size. Sensitivity analyses showed estimates could deviate by up to 15%.

Summary: RVD1 can prevent STZ-induced type 1 diabetes by its anti-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant actions and by activating the Pdx gene that is needed for pancreatic beta cell proliferation. The study results suggest that RVD1 can alleviate the severity of type 1 diabetes through multiple pathways.

Dietary Supplementation with Exogenous Sea-Cucumber-Derived Ceramides and Glucosylceramides Alleviates Insulin Resistance in High-Fructose-Diet-Fed Rats by Upregulating the IRS/PI3K/Akt Signaling Pathway

Jin-Yue Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that sea-cucumber-derived glucosylceramides and ceramides have a certain improvement effect on insulin resistance, as they can improve glucose tolerance, reduce blood sugar levels, and alleviate accompanying hypertension. Glucosylceramides alleviate hepatic insulin resistance mainly by inhibiting gluconeogenesis and promoting glycogen synthesis, while ceramides alleviate insulin resistance mainly by promoting glycogen synthesis in skeletal muscle.

Dietary n-3 PUFA Deficiency Increases Vulnerability to Scopolamine-Induced Cognitive Impairment in Male C57BL/6 Mice

Dan-Dan Wang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that dietary n-3 PUFA deficiency decreases brain DHA concentrations and increases vulnerability to scopolamine-induced cognitive impairment in C57BL/6 male mice. Rats deficient in n-3 PUFA show poorer spatial learning and memory, more obvious cholinergic dysfunction, oxidative stress, apoptosis, neuroinflammation, and neurodevelopmental delay compared to their saline-treated controls.
