Ocean acidification induced changes in Ulva fasciata biochemistry may improve Dicentrarchus labrax aquaculture via enhanced antimicrobial activity

Summary: Changes in seawater carbonate chemistry, specifically ocean acidification (OA), can impact metabolic activities and phytochemical production in marine algae. This study investigated the potential of OA-induced changes in methanol bioactivity from the macroalgae Ulva fasciata, to enhance larval European sea bass aquaculture. The results showed that extracts from U. fasciata grown under pCO(2)-750 had the highest phenolic content, flavonoid content, and exhibited the highest antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. These extracts, when used as a daily water additive for sea bass larvae, resulted in a significant reduction in pathogenic bacteria and an increase in survival rate. The growth of sea bass larvae was also highest after exposure to U. fasciata extracts grown at pCO(2)-750, potentially due to higher levels of phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Untargeted Metabolomics Unveil Changes in Autotrophic and Mixotrophic Galdieria sulphuraria Exposed to High-Light Intensity

Summary: The thermoacidophilic red alga Galdieria sulphuraria has optimized a photosynthetic system for low-light conditions over billions of years, depending heavily on light and substrate supply for growth. Higher cell densities were obtained under high-light conditions, with observed reductions in photosynthetic pigments suggesting the alga may be able to alleviate the effects of photoinhibition. Extensive untargeted metabolomics studies revealed metabolic changes in G. sulphuraria grown under different light intensities, with up-regulation of bilayer lipids and changes in amino acids, amines, and amide metabolism under high-light exposure. Additionally, mixotrophic G. sulphuraria showed higher accumulations of osmoprotectant sugars and sugar alcohols compared to autotrophic algae in response to stress from high concentration of organic carbon sources.
