Production of Carotenoids and Phospholipids by Thraustochytrium sp. in Batch and Repeated-Batch Culture

Allison Leyton et al.

Summary: The carotenogenic thraustochytrid Thraustochytrium sp. RT2316-16 was grown in batch and repeated-batch cultures using different feeds containing glucose, glycerol, and yeast extract, for the production of lipids, phospholipids, and carotenoids. The composition of carotenoids depended strongly on the composition of the feed.

PUFA synthase-independent DHA synthesis pathway in Parietichytrium sp. and its modification to produce EPA and n-3DPA

Yohei Ishibashi et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that Parietichytrium sp. synthesizes DHA only through the elongase/desaturase pathway, and engineering this thraustochytrid allowed the production of EPA and n-3DPA. This system may provide a suitable solution for the large scale production of omega-3 fatty acids.

Antarctic Thraustochytrids as Sources of Carotenoids and High-Value Fatty Acids

Allison Leyton et al.

Summary: Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and carotenoids are essential components in human dietary supplements and commercial aquacultured seafood feeds. Thraustochytrids, microorganisms found in coastal waters, have been shown to be potential natural sources of these compounds. This research focused on the lipid and carotenoid production capacity of thraustochytrids isolated from Antarctica, with promising results in the production of lipids containing EPA+DHA and carotenoids, particularly in the isolate RT2316-16 identified as Thraustochytrium sp.
