Effects of Ocean Acidification on Molting, Oxidative Stress, and Gut Microbiota in Juvenile Horseshoe Crab Tachypleus tridentatus

Ximei Liu et al.

Summary: This study reveals the potential threat of ocean acidification (OA) to the tri-spine horseshoe crab population, highlighting the negative effects on chitinase activity, ecdysone expression, oxidative stress, and gut microbiota. Although the growth and molting rate showed no significant differences, the physiological and microbial responses of the larvae indicate the potential risks of OA to the stability of horseshoe crab populations and overall ecosystem health.

Comparative analysis of the Mercenaria mercenaria genome provides insights into the diversity of transposable elements and immune molecules in bivalve mollusks

Sarah Farhat et al.

Summary: The study generated a 1.86 Gb chromosome-level assembly of the hard clam genome, revealing a high proportion of repeated elements and major chromosome rearrangements compared to other assemblies. Comparative analysis showed a diversification in immune-related proteins, particularly tumor necrosis factors and C1q domain-containing proteins. Additionally, a range of LTR-retrotransposons elements, especially Steamer elements, were identified, indicating a potential target for investigating cancer cell development and transmission in bivalve mollusks.

Chromosomal assembly of the flat oyster (Ostrea edulis L.) genome as a new genetic resource for aquaculture

Isabelle Boutet et al.

Summary: This study presents a chromosome-level assembly and annotation of the European flat oyster genome using a combination of PacBio, Illumina, 10X linked, and Hi-C sequencing. The assembled genome has a size of 887.2 Mb with a scaffold-N50 of 97.1 Mb, scaffolded on 10 pseudochromosomes. Annotation of the genome identified 35,962 protein-coding genes. The study also provides insights into transposable element diversity, tRNA and miRNA composition, and the molecular response of O. edulis to the parasite M. refringens. This genome assembly serves as a valuable resource for further genomic studies and genetic breeding in support of oyster aquaculture and natural reef restoration.

Organic biopolymers of venus clams: Collagen-related matrix in the bivalve shells with crossed-lamellar ultrastructure

Oluwatoosin B. A. Agbaje et al.

Summary: This study examined the organic macromolecules in two venus shells with crossed lamellar ultrastructure. It was found that the shells contain low concentrations of organic macromolecules, including chitin and proteins. The presence of collagen matrix in the shells suggests potential for new biomaterial sources, with a structural organization predominantly consisting of helical structures rather than silk-fibroin.
