The Western Canada Sedimentary Basin: A confluence of science, technology, and ideas

Summary: The Western Canada Sedimentary Basin is the second largest intra-cratonic basin in the world, with abundant oil and gas resources. It has multiple major source rocks, diverse reservoir horizons, and a complex hydrocarbon migration system. Despite its long exploration history, there are still significant untapped zones and ongoing development of new oil and gas plays in the basin. However, the economic potential of the basin is hindered by its distance from tidewater and limited take-away capacity.

Comparison of shale depth functions in contrasting offshore basins and sealing behaviour for CH4 and CO2 containment systems

Summary: Comparison of mudrock compaction trends in the Rovuma Basin offshore Mozambique with other basins reveals that burial rates and timing of rifting are the main factors causing differences. The Rovuma Basin shows similar trends to the Kutai Basin and Gulf of Mexico, but different from the Norwegian North Sea. The relationships between seismic velocities also show strong similarities between the Rovuma and Gulf of Mexico basins. This comparison provides insights into the capillary sealing potential of Cretaceous mudrocks in the Rovuma Basin and offers a general approach for assessing CO2 storage potential.

Summary: Comparisons between the Rovuma Basin offshore Mozambique and other offshore basins, such as the Norwegian North Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Kutai Basin offshore Indonesia, reveal that differences in mudrock compaction trends are mainly caused by burial rates and timing of rifting. The Rovuma Basin shows similar trends to the Kutai Basin and the Gulf of Mexico, but differs significantly from the Norwegian North Sea. Seismic velocity-depth relationships also demonstrate strong similarities between the Rovuma and Gulf of Mexico basins. The study assesses the capillary sealing potential of Cretaceous mudrocks in the Rovuma Basin, providing insights into CO2 storage potential. The evaluation is based on a mudstone permeability-prediction function and a method for mapping permeability to threshold pressure.

Numerical modelling of long-term CO2 storage mechanisms in saline aquifers using the Sleipner benchmark dataset

Summary: The study utilized field data for numerical modeling of long-term CO2 storage and revealed that the dominant storage mechanism during CO2 injection was structural trapping, while residual gas trapping occurred after injection cessation. Significant changes in storage mechanisms occurred within 20 years post-injection, transitioning to solubility trapping after 100 years with decreased residual CO2 trapping. Mass diffusion of CO2 controlled CO2 invasion into the cap rock over a simulation period of 1000 years.
