Polymer Features in Crystallization

Wen-Bing Hu

Summary: This review provides an overview of the importance of crystallization in natural and synthetic polymers/macromolecules. It discusses the typical features exhibited by chain-like macromolecules in crystallization, including anisotropic interactions, chain folding, chemical confinement, and mechanical enhancement. These features separately cover the thermodynamics and kinetics of polymer crystallization, as well as the crystallinity and mechanical properties of semicrystalline polymers. The review concludes with the discussion on how these features enhance specific functions of crystalline polymers, highlighting the challenging yet promising nature of polymer crystallization as a field.

Formation of Stacked Three-Dimensional Polymer Single Crystals

Zhixin Guo et al.

Summary: 3D single crystals with uniquely oriented hexagonal shape were obtained by isothermal crystallization of isotactic polystyrene. The cracks tended to form along the diagonals of hexagonal stack due to mismatch in coefficients of thermal expansion during quenching. The growth mechanisms leading to 3D single crystals can be observed for all crystallizable polymers.
