Steady state crack growth in viscoelastic solids: A comparative study

Chung-Yuen Hui et al.

Summary: We compare different theories on the steady state growth of a Mode I crack in linear viscoelastic solids and test these theories against experimental data. Realistic constitutive models are used in the analytical solutions, and new results such as the strain field near the crack tip and the investigation of the viscoelastic trumpet shape and size are presented.

Fracture of model end-linked networks

Christopher W. Barney et al.

Summary: Advances in polymer chemistry have made it possible to synthesize molecularly precise polymer networks with homogeneous structure, allowing for the study of their elastic and failure properties. This study developed a theory of network fracture that accounts for loop defects and tested it against experimental measurements, providing new insights into network fracture mechanisms.

Controlling Architecture and Mechanical Properties of Polyether Networks with Organoaluminum Catalysts

Aaliyah Z. Dookhith et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between reaction pathway, network architecture, and mechanical properties in poly(ethyl glycidyl ether) networks synthesized by epoxide ring-opening polymerization with two organoaluminum catalysts. The key finding is that controlled polymerizations lead to highly cross-linked, stiff, and brittle networks.

Chiral diboranes as catalysts for the stereoselective organopolymerization of epoxides

Ayla Sirin-Sariaslan et al.

Summary: The stereoselective polymerization of epoxides can be achieved with organocatalysts, resulting in well-defined and high molar mass polyethers. This method also allows the incorporation of stereocontrolled polyether blocks in complex polymer architectures.

Fracture and fatigue of ideal polymer networks

Shaoting Lin et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the fracture and fatigue of ideal polymer networks with controlled densities of dangling-chain defects. It is found that the fracture toughness and fatigue threshold of an ideal polymer network are almost the same without defects. Even after introducing a low density of dangling-chain defects, the fracture toughness and fatigue threshold of the ideal polymer network remain approximately the same. The fracture toughness of the ideal polymer network is also independent of the loading rate.
