Polyelectrolyte-calcium complexes as a pre-precursor induce biomimetic mineralization of collagen

Zihuai Zhou et al.

Summary: A novel polyelectrolyte-calcium complex pre-precursor (PCCP) process for collagen mineralization was proposed, in which liquid-like electropositive PAsp-Ca complexes infiltrate electronegative collagen fibrils, immobilized within the fibrils via chelation and hydrogen bonds, and prevent outward movement of free calcium ions while recruiting phosphate and hydroxide through electrostatic attractions. This process not only unites two distinct crystallization pathways but also provides a novel strategy for rapid biomimetic mineralization of collagen.
