Dimeric capsule vs columnar polymer: Structural factors determining the aggregation behavior of amino acid functionalized benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamides in solution and in the solid-state

Filip Perlitius et al.

Summary: This study investigates the non-covalent aggregation of four benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide (BTA) derivatives formed from glycine or L-valine esters in both solid-state and chloroform solution. The study reveals the significant role of the steric bulk of the C-terminus protecting group in supramolecular aggregation in the solid-state and highlights the essential influence of substituent steric bulk on the nature and stability of BTA aggregates in distinct phases.

Mechanistic Insight into Supramolecular Polymerization in Water Tunable by Molecular Geometry

Fan Xu et al.

Summary: Supramolecular self-assembly based on non-covalent bonding in water shows great potential in biomedical applications. This study presents the assembly and disassembly of geometrical isomers of a stiff-stilbene bis-urea amphiphile in pure water, and reveals the unique properties of hydrophobic effects in water. An isomer-dependent assembly process is discovered, which can be used to control aggregation in aqueous media. These findings provide important insights for the design and application of supramolecular self-assembly in water.

How Subtle Changes Can Make a Difference: Reproducibility in Complex Supramolecular Systems

Tobias Schnitzer et al.

Summary: Supramolecular chemists construct multicomponent systems with emerging complexity by combining covalent and noncovalent reactions, but this strategy often comes with difficult preparation protocols and a narrow window of suitable conditions. Subtle irregularities have a significant impact on supramolecular systems, potentially leading to pitfalls in the study of complex systems.

Twisted Biphenyl-Diimide Derivatives with Aggregation-Induced Emission and Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence for High Performance OLEDs

Zhijun Wang et al.

Summary: Novel pi-conjugated donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) type compounds BPI-PhPXZ and BPI-PhDMAC show promising aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) properties, with high external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) achieved in doped OLEDs. The well-designed BPI acceptor plays a beneficial role in the development of efficient D-A-D type TADF emitters with AIE properties.

Semitransparent Layers of Social Self-Sorting Merocyanine Dyes for Ultranarrow Bandwidth Organic Photodiodes

Tim Schembri et al.

Summary: Two dipolar merocyanines with the same chromophore but different alkyl substituents exhibit distinct packing arrangements in their solid state, resulting in ultranarrow absorption bands. Their self-sorting behavior in mixed thin films affects the opto-electronic properties. The tailored two-component material can optimize organic photodiodes with narrow bandwidths and high external quantum efficiency, suitable for applications such as low-power heart rate monitors.
