Sustainable ABA triblock methacrylate copolymers incorporating both high and low Tg terpene-derived monomers

Rachel L. Atkinson et al.

Summary: We reported the synthesis of terpene-based monomers from beta-pinene, which can be used to produce polymers with high Tg values and well-defined structures. The synthesized materials showed promising properties as hard blocks in thermoplastic elastomers, and ABA triblock copolymers incorporating a renewable soft block were also successfully synthesized using a difunctional RAFT polymerization method. The initial phase separation behavior and adhesive properties of these copolymers were investigated, highlighting their potential as renewably sourced thermoplastic elastomers.

A self-crosslinking monomer, α-pinene methacrylate: understanding and exploiting hydrogen abstraction

Olivia R. Monaghan et al.

Summary: This study reports the discovery and analysis of a self-crosslinking sustainable terpene derived monomer, alpha-pinene methacrylate (alpha PMA), and investigates its behavior through computational and experimental methods. The monomer undergoes self-crosslinking during free radical polymerization by chain transfer through hydrogen abstraction from a pendant group. This self-crosslinking process can be exploited to generate renewable high internal phase emulsions.

Synthesis of novel carvone (meth)acrylate monomers for the production of hydrophilic polymers with high terpene content

Ulisse Montanari et al.

Summary: Research has shown that terpene-based monomers and polymers are typically hydrophobic, which restricts their use in aqueous environments. To address this limitation, a novel synthetic strategy was developed to improve the hydrophilicity and polar group content on the polymer side chains by functionalizing a model terpene monomer.

RAFT polymerisation of renewable terpene (meth)acrylates and the convergent synthesis of methacrylate-acrylate-methacrylate triblock copolymers

Rachel L. Atkinson et al.

Summary: Terpenes are considered ideal candidates for sustainable polymer feedstocks due to their natural abundance and availability from existing waste streams. By using RAFT control, well-defined polymers and precise di- and multiblock copolymer architectures can be synthesized. A wide range of T-g values are observed for terpene (meth)acrylate homopolymers, which can be utilized to create renewably-sourced hard-soft block copolymers.
