The evolution of the subcontinental mantle beneath the Central Iberian Zone: Geochemical tracking of its mafic magmatism from the Neoproterozoic to the Cenozoic

C. Villaseca et al.

Summary: The study analyzes the evolution of continental lithosphere beneath western Iberia and its relationship with central European lithosphere. It finds that two orogenic events in the region triggered significant magmatic activity, along with intracrustal recycling and crustal thickening. Minor crustal subduction signatures are observed after these orogenic events, suggesting the presence of an old enriched subcontinental mantle beneath central Iberia. Additionally, mantle-derived magmas from central European terranes show distinct geochemical tracers compared to the studied central Iberian terrane. Furthermore, post-Variscan mafic magmatism indicates lithospheric mantle rejuvenation through widespread asthenospheric upwelling in western circum-Mediterranean areas. However, minor episodes of intraplate K-rich alkaline magmatism in southern Mediterranean Europe suggest a complex lithospheric/asthenospheric mantle flow regime during post-collisional convergence between Africa and Eurasia.

Evidence for polybaric fractional crystallization in a continental arc: Hidden Lakes mafic complex, Sierra Nevada batholith, California

Madeline J. Lewis et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the Hidden Lakes mafic complex in the central-eastern Sierra Nevada batholith, investigating the fractional crystallization process of hydrous basalt in the upper crust. A two-stage polybaric crystallization model was constructed to demonstrate the potential mechanism for the generation of arc granitoid melts. This model supports polybaric differentiation as a possible explanation for the observed compositions in continental arc batholiths.

The gabbro to amphibolite transition along a hydration front

Caio A. Santos et al.

Summary: By utilizing thermodynamic modeling, petrographic and mineral chemistry analysis, a suite of amphibolite facies metamafic rocks variably affected by metamorphism were studied, revealing three main types: metagabbro, lineated metagabbro, and amphibolite. The differences in mineral assemblages between these types were primarily controlled by the amount of H2O equilibrated with the rocks, with amphibolites representing fluid-saturated conditions, while metagabbro and lineated metagabbro equilibrated under H2O undersaturated conditions. Variations in microstructure were attributed to varying length scales of diffusion during metamorphism.

Titanium in calcium amphibole: Behavior and thermometry

Yue Liao et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new Ti-Amp thermometer for thermometry of high-grade metamorphic rocks. The thermometer's application is subject to specific conditions for accurate results, yet it can be successfully applied to natural rocks containing amphibole. Further research is needed to improve the understanding of amphibole behavior and stability, as well as to enhance the accuracy of both pseudosection modeling and conventional thermometry.

Phase heritage during replacement reactions in Ti-bearing minerals

Mark Pearce et al.

Summary: Replacement reactions occur during metamorphism and metasomatism in response to changes in pressure, temperature and bulk rock and fluid compositions. Understanding the phases that have previously been present in the rocks is crucial for interpreting these changes. The crystallography of replacement phases is often controlled by parent reactant phases during fluid-mediated replacement, with excessive fluid fluxing potentially leading to extreme element mobility.
