Tibetan Plateau growth linked to crustal thermal transitions since the Miocene

Xiu-Zheng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates crustal xenoliths and zircon xenocrysts in lavas from the Qiangtang Block to better understand the deep crust and mantle events associated with the topographic transition of central-northern Tibet. The findings suggest that the middle crust of the block has been hot since the early Miocene, supporting the formation of unexposed felsic plutons during crustal melting. The results also indicate that the early Miocene cold-hot thermal transition of the middle-lower crust was synchronous with the topographic evolution from high-relief mountains to a flat plateau, highlighting the role of crustal flow in the topographic smoothing mechanism for central-northern Tibet.

Partial melting of granodiorite: insights from ediacaran granulite-facies metamorphism in Southern Brazil

M. Pavan et al.

Summary: The study in the Southern Ribeira Belt of Brazil reveals the presence of ortho-derived migmatites with features of partial melting, producing granitic and peraluminous melts under high temperature and pressure conditions. Through modeling and chemical analysis, it is found that the melts have characteristics of granite and peraluminous melts, with slight variations from the actual collected samples.

Origins and Scales of Compositional Variations in Crustally Derived Granitic Rocks: The Example of the Dartmoor Pluton in the Cornubian Batholith of Southwest Britain

John D. Clemens et al.

Summary: The Dartmoor pluton, formed around 280 million years ago, is composed of multiple sheets of granitic magma with diverse sources, including water-rich magmas. It exhibits variations in structure, chemistry, and isotopes. The main chemical changes are attributed to a combination of entrained peritectic plagioclase, orthopyroxene, and ilmenite, as well as local crystal fractionation, rather than simple mineral fractionation.
