Hypocretin/orexin system in the nucleus accumbens as a promising player in the extinction and reinstatement of methamphetamine-induced CPP

Haleh Amirteymori et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of the hypocretin/orexin system in treating psychostimulant addiction. The findings suggest that modulation of this system has therapeutic potential in the extinction and reinstatement of Meth-induced conditioned place preference.

Sex differences in methamphetamine use disorder perused from pre-clinical and clinical studies: Potential therapeutic impacts

Atul P. Daiwile et al.

Summary: Methamphetamine (METH) use and misuse have severe socioeconomic consequences and are influenced by multifactorial effects on the central and peripheral nervous systems. Sex differences play a role in METH pharmacokinetics, behavioral changes, cognitive processes, brain structural changes, and effects on neurotransmitter systems and molecular mechanisms. Considering sex as a critical variable is important in developing pharmacotherapeutic approaches for METH use disorder in humans.

Effects of dopamine D1-and D2-like receptors in the CA1 region of the hippocampus on expression and extinction of morphine-induced conditioned place preference in rats

Farzaneh Nazari-Serenjeh et al.

Summary: This study explored the role of D1-like and D2-like receptor antagonists in the CA1 region in the expression and extinction of morphine-induced CPP. The results showed that the antagonists dose-dependently attenuated the expression of morphine-induced CPP and shortened the extinction phase without affecting locomotor activity, suggesting the involvement of these receptors in the rewarding properties of morphine.

Cannabidiol efficiently suppressed the acquisition and expression of methamphetamine-induced conditioned place preference in the rat

Mahsa Anooshe et al.

Summary: The study found that Cannabidiol (CBD) has an inhibitory effect on Methamphetamine-induced conditioned place preference, with a more potent impact in the acquisition phase. This suggests that CBD could be a beneficial compound for treating drug abuse, but further research is needed to fully understand its effectiveness.

Systemic administration of N-acetylcysteine during the extinction period and on the reinstatement day decreased the maintenance of morphine rewarding properties in the rats

Seyedeh-Najmeh Katebi et al.

Summary: This study found that daily administration of high doses of NAC reduced extinction response during the extinction period in rats, while lower doses of NAC did not significantly reduce CPP scores. The application of NAC can attenuate morphine reward-associated behaviors and inhibit the reinstatement of morphine CPP, indicating its potential therapeutic use in combating morphine dependence.

Hippocampal neurogenesis interferes with extinction and reinstatement of methamphetamine-associated reward memory in mice

Xiaohang Che et al.

Summary: The study found that methamphetamine administration can temporarily inhibit hippocampal neurogenesis, but it returns to normal after extinction; Promoting hippocampal neurogenesis can facilitate the extinction of methamphetamine reward memory and inhibit reinstatement; Promoting hippocampal neurogenesis after the acquisition of reward memory, instead of before, has beneficial effects on methamphetamine addiction.

Blockade of orexin receptors in the hippocampal dentate gyrus reduced the extinction latency of morphine-induced place preference in male rats

Kimia RayatSanati et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that intra-DG administration of the highest dose of OX1R antagonist shortened the extinction latency of morphine-CPP compared to the DMSO group, while the OX2R antagonist did not significantly alter the latency. Finding suggest that blocking OX1R within the DG facilitates the extinction of morphine-induced reward. The OX1R antagonist might be considered a convenient therapeutic factor in repressing drug-seeking behaviors with low-dose treatments.
