Diagnosis of infectious diseases in immunocompromised hosts using metagenomic next generation sequencing-based diagnostics

Amanda M. Casto et al.

Summary: The diagnosis of infectious diseases in immunocompromised hosts is challenging, and metagenomic next generation sequencing (mNGS) based diagnostics have shown potential in identifying causative organisms. However, current studies have limitations, and further research is needed to assess its performance and clinical impact.

Comparative analysis of infectious complications with outpatient vs. inpatient care for adults with high-risk myeloid neoplasm receiving intensive induction chemotherapy

Anna B. Halpern et al.

Summary: The study found that early hospital discharge (EHD) care strategy following intensive acute myeloid leukemia (AML)-like chemotherapy is safe, but EHD patients had higher rates of gram-positive bacteremias. Improvements in catheter management may help increase the safety of this care approach.

Clinical Impact of Metagenomic Next-Generation Sequencing of Plasma Cell-Free DNA for the Diagnosis of Infectious Diseases: A Multicenter Retrospective Cohort Study

Summary: This retrospective cohort study evaluated the clinical impact of plasma mNGS (Karius test) in routine practice, showing limited real-world impact with only a small percentage of cases having positive effect on patient management. Further studies are needed to define high-yield patient populations and integrate mNGS into current testing algorithms effectively.

Comparison of salvage chemotherapy regimens and prognostic significance of minimal residual disease in relapsed/refractory acute myeloid leukemia

Muhammad Umair Mushtaq et al.

Summary: In patients with relapsed or refractory AML, salvage chemotherapy with CLAG-M was associated with higher complete remission rates, MRD negativity, and improved overall survival when followed by transplant.

Incidence of invasive fungal infection in acute lymphoblastic and acute myelogenous leukemia in the era of antimold prophylaxis

Sang-Min Oh et al.

Summary: While the incidence of invasive fungal infection (IFI) in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) has decreased with antimold prophylaxis, the risk of IFI in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) without prophylaxis is not lower than that in AML. Lack of antimold prophylaxis and prolonged neutropenia are independent risk factors for IFI. Healthcare providers should be vigilant in detecting IFI in ALL patients, particularly those with risk factors.
