Burning plasma achieved in inertial fusion

A. B. Zylstra et al.

Summary: A burning-plasma state has been achieved in the laboratory using a laser facility to generate X-rays and compress and heat a fuel-containing capsule. Experiments show fusion self-heating exceeding the mechanical work input, and a subset of experiments appear to have crossed the static self-heating boundary, providing an opportunity to study α-particle-dominated plasmas and burning-plasma physics.

Path to Increasing p-B11 Reactivity via ps and ns Lasers

Thomas A. Mehlhorn et al.

Summary: This article investigates the possibilities of nonequilibrium fusion reactions driven by ultrashort pulse lasers and their potential to initiate fusion burns. Analyzing experimental parameters and updated cross sections, it concludes that significant alpha yields are the result of beam fusion reactions, providing a path to increasing fusion reactivity towards ignition.

Summary: This paper explains and reviews the Lawson criterion and provides a compilation of parameters from fusion experiments. The Lawson criterion is an important factor in assessing the feasibility of fusion energy systems. The paper serves as a reference and tutorial for fusion researchers and enthusiasts.

On a fusion chain reaction via suprathermal ions in high-density H-11B plasma

Fabio Belloni

Summary: The study explores the potential of the B-11(p,3 alpha) fusion reaction in thermonuclear reactions, finding that elastic collisions are necessary to increase reactivity and overcome temperature limitations. Results show that even at high temperatures and densities, the multiplication factor remains low, limiting the energy yield.

Energetic α-particle sources produced through proton-boron reactions by high-energy high-intensity laser beams

J. Bonvalet et al.

Summary: The experiment measured alpha-particle production in proton-boron reactions using a laser-driven proton beam, and numerical simulations were used to analyze the data. Despite lower cross sections for high-energy protons in proton-boron reactions, a significant amount of alpha particles were detected, reaching energies of 10-20 MeV.
