The Flims rock avalanche: structure and consequences

O. Adrian Pfiffner

Summary: The Flims rock avalanche occurred in a limestone sequence and the gliding surface was parallel to bedding and/or Alpine foliation. The formation of the rock avalanche was influenced by structural weaknesses in the solid limestone and the involvement of a post-glacial water-saturated substrate. The internal deformation of the rock avalanche was characterized by dynamic fragmentation, with heterogeneity in the distribution. The bulldozing effect of the moving rock avalanche caused the elevation of the valley floor and entrainment of fragments from the valley flank and neighboring Tamins rock avalanche deposit.

The morphology and sedimentology of the Walai rock avalanche in southern China, with implications for confined rock avalanches

Ruichen Chen et al.

Summary: The Walai rock avalanche occurred in the high mountainous areas of the eastern Tibetan Plateau and was laterally and frontally confined. The initial rock slope failure was determined to be a wedge failure controlled by bedding and two joint sets approximately 38,000 years ago. The estimated deposited volume of this rock avalanche was 5.2 x 107m3, which was 1.24 times the mass detached from the source area. The study also identified various features and stages in the emplacement process of the rock avalanche.

Reconstructing the Gorte and Spiaz de Navesele Landslides, NE of Lake Garda, Trentino Dolomites (Italy)

Giacomo Ruggia et al.

Summary: A multi-method approach was used to reconstruct the Gorte rock avalanche at the northeastern end of Lake Garda, suggesting it occurred around 6.1±0.8 ka. The event may have triggered the Spiaz de Navesele-Salto della Capra landslide, with related deposits covering the southern end of the Gorte deposits. This study highlights the potential for seismic triggers in the region.

Controls on the formation and size of potential landslide dams and dammed lakes in the Austrian Alps

Anne-Laure Argentin et al.

Summary: This study focused on the simulation and analysis of landslides, landslide dams, and lakes in the Austrian Alps, revealing that the formation of landslide dams and lakes is influenced by local topography and tectonic units. Results showed that in cases of efficient damming, lake volume increases linearly with landslide volume, with the largest lakes forming in glacial troughs.
