Coupling and decoupling of soil carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus stocks following grazing exclusion in temperate grasslands

Jiwei Li et al.

Summary: This study examined the effects of long-term grazing exclusion on soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) stocks in temperate grasslands on the Loess Plateau, China. The results showed that grazing exclusion significantly increased SOC and TN stocks but declined TP stocks. Furthermore, the study found that grazing exclusion was more beneficial for SOC and TN accumulations than for TP accretion, and SOC and TN stocks were not related to TP stock.

Effect of grazing exclusion on ecosystem services dynamics, trade-offs and synergies in Northern Tibet

Yixuan Liu et al.

Summary: This study mainly analyzed the effects of grazing exclusion on ecosystem services and found that the values of biodiversity conservation, water conservation, and soil conservation were higher in the fencing region. Most counties in the fencing region showed increasing trends in biodiversity conservation and water conservation. All ecosystem services exhibited synergistic relationships, but with a weakening overall trend. Land use intensity, grazing intensity, precipitation, and altitude were the main factors affecting the spatial heterogeneity of ecosystem services in the non-fencing region, while distance to road, distance to town, land use intensity, and temperature were the main influencing factors in the fencing region.

Effects of grazing on plant species and phylogenetic diversity in alpine grasslands, Northern Tibet

Wei Sun et al.

Summary: This study compared the differences of plant species and phylogenetic alpha-and beta-diversity between grazing and fencing conditions at three alpine grasslands in Northern Tibet. The results showed that grazing significantly impacted plant community compositions and diversity indices, especially at the ASMSG site.

Drought reduces the effectiveness of ecological projects: Perspectives from the inter-annual variability of vegetation index

Meng Li et al.

Summary: The ecological projects implemented by the Chinese government in the Tibetan Plateau have led to a significant decrease in grazing intensity, but have not led to the expected increase in grassland NDVImax. However, it was found that drought was the main factor driving the decrease in NDVImax, with severe and extreme drought events contributing to reductions in vegetation growth. Despite some human-induced degradation, the overall effects of the ecological projects on vegetation changes in the region were positive, although these effects were somewhat offset by the impact of drought.

Threshold effect of ecosystem services in response to climate change and vegetation coverage change in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau ecological shelter

Shuai Ma et al.

Summary: The study revealed significant impacts of climate change and vegetation restoration on ecosystem services in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau ecological shelter, with precipitation crucial for water yield and soil conservation, and temperature and vegetation cover affecting net primary productivity. Thresholds for climate and vegetation factors were identified, providing important insights for large-scale ecological management and moderate restoration efforts.

Precipitation dominants synergies and trade-offs among ecosystem services across the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Junhe Chen et al.

Summary: The research in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau highlighted the significance of precipitation as the main influencing factor in the relationships among ecosystem services (ESs). It was found that the relationship between water yield (WY) and carbon storage (CS) was primarily synergistic, whereas the relationships between WY and meat supply (MS) and between CS and MS were primarily trade-offs. The geographically weighted logistic regression (GWLR) model provided improved calculation to explain the correlation between the relationships among ESs and the influencing factors.

Grassland ecological compensation policy in China improves grassland quality and increases herders' income

Lingling Hou et al.

Summary: This study examines the effects of Grassland Ecological Compensation Policy (GECP) on grassland quality and herder income, finding that while it improves grassland quality and increases herder income, it also exacerbates income inequality among herders. The program has induced changes in livestock production behavior, highlighting the importance of flexibility and adaptation to local resource circumstances in such programs.

Combatting global grassland degradation

Richard D. Bardgett et al.

Summary: Grasslands provide crucial ecosystem services, but are often overlooked in sustainable policy. Degradation of grasslands threatens biodiversity, ecosystem services, and human well-being. Strategies to combat degradation and promote restoration include increasing global recognition of grasslands, developing standardized indicators, using scientific innovation for effective restoration, and enhancing knowledge transfer and data sharing. These actions can help halt degradation, enhance restoration success, and protect the socio-economic, cultural, and ecological benefits that grasslands provide.
