Quantifying the importance of deep root water uptake for apple trees' hydrological and physiological performance in drylands

Min Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of lack of access to deep root water uptake on the water balance, growth, and production of apple trees in drylands. The findings indicate that the absence of deep soil water uptake reduces trees' drought resistance, leading to greater water stress and decreased transpiration, photosynthesis rate, leaf water potential, yield, and quality of apple trees.

Gravity fingering control on evaporation and deep drainage in a 3D porous medium

Rebecca Liyanage et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of gravity fingering on deep drainage coupled with surface evaporation in semi-arid conditions, finding that gravity fingering increases the fraction of water that bypasses the evaporation zone fourfold.

Contribution of root decay process on soil infiltration capacity and soil water replenishment of planted forestland in semi-arid regions

Gao-Lin Wu et al.

Summary: Large-scale afforestation exacerbates soil water consumption, but the decay process of tree roots can increase soil porosity, improve infiltration rate, and effectively replenish water in dry soil layers.

Change in soil water deficit and soil organic matter consumption over time in rain-fed apricot orchards on the semi-arid Loess Plateau, China

Kaiqi Yang et al.

Summary: The impacts of massive reforestation on soil water and soil organic matter in the ecosystem are receiving more attention worldwide. However, the response of soil water content and soil organic matter after the conversion of agricultural land to economic forestland in semi-arid areas is not well understood. This study found that long-term planting of apricot trees under extensive management could worsen soil water deficit and soil organic matter consumption, thereby restricting apricot growth. Appropriate management measures should be implemented to maintain and improve soil water content and soil organic matter conditions and enhance orchard productivity and vigor over ten years of cultivation.

Effect of using an infiltration hole and mulching in fish-scale pits on soil water, nitrogen, and organic matter contents: Evidence from a 4-year field experiment

Ke Wang et al.

Summary: Soil water, nitrogen, and organic matter contents are significant limiting factors for vegetation restoration in arid and semi-arid areas. Combining slope engineering measures, such as infiltration holes, with mulching is effective in improving soil conditions for vegetation restoration on degraded slopes. In this study, infiltration holes were found to be the most effective measure for increasing nitrogen and organic matter, while also aiding in water replenishment of deep soils in semi-arid regions.

Improved Regional Scale Dynamic Evapotranspiration Estimation Under Changing Vegetation and Climate

Krysta Giles-Hansen et al.

Summary: Vegetation change can significantly impact evapotranspiration, with varying sensitivity based on climate conditions. The study in British Columbia's snow-dominated interior showed that moderate climates are most sensitive to forest disturbance, while wetter climates are less affected by changes in vegetation.
