Variations in the disintegration rate of physical crusts induced by artificial rainfall in different alcohol concentrations

Lin Chen et al.

Summary: This study examines the disintegration processes of physical crusts in typical cropland soil from the Loess Plateau, China induced by artificial rainfall. The results show that the content of organic matter and sand decreases with increasing rainfall duration, while bulk density, silt, and clay percentages increase. The disintegration rate is the lowest when the rainfall lasts for 30 minutes, and the 50% alcohol concentration slows down the disintegration process most efficiently. The erosion resistance of the physical crust is lower compared to the sedimentary crust.

Summary: This study investigated the differences in rainwater transformation into surface and belowground runoff on karst slopes and found that slope gradients and bedrock fissures have major effects on the process, while soil loss via rainfall impact is very slow.

Simulation Study on Hydrological Process of Soil Cracks in Open-Pit Coal Mine Dump

Gang Lv et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of crack width, rainfall intensity, and two simulation methods on runoff, infiltration, and leakage in a solid waste dumping site in an industrial and mining construction area. The results show that rainfall intensity and crack width are the main factors affecting total runoff, with total runoff decreasing as crack width increases. The stable infiltration rate also decreases with increasing crack width under the same rainfall intensities. When rainfall intensity exceeds 90 mm/h, leakage contributes more than 50% to total infiltration. Compared to the equivalent model, the total runoff of the solid model is reduced by 5% to 13% under simulated rainfall conditions. Furthermore, the cumulative leakage of the solid model is 29% to 71% larger than that of the equivalent model under the same conditions.

Splash erosion affected by initial soil moisture and surface conditions under simulated rainfall

Nives Zambon et al.

Summary: Splash erosion is the initial stage of soil erosion by water and is affected by soil initial water content and surface condition. Wet-sealed soil samples have significantly lower splash erosion rates compared to air-dried samples, due to surface ponding leading to seal formation. Different rainfall simulators produce varying amounts of splash erosion rates.

Rainfall drop arrival rate at the ground: A potentially informative parameter in the experimental study of infiltration, soil erosion, and related land surface processes

David Dunkerley

Summary: Rainfall drop arrival rate (DAR) quantifies the impact of drops on the ground based on size and time, with implications for land surface processes. Attention to DAR is recommended for research on soil splash and erosion processes.

Effect of leaf distribution pattern on the interception storage capacity of leaf litter under simulated rainfall conditions

Kaifeng Li et al.

Summary: The interception of rainwater by leaf litter plays a significant role in forest hydrological processes. Leaf distribution pattern and slope have a notable impact on the interception storage capacity of leaf litter, with broad-leaf litter having higher delaying capacity and ISC compared to needle-leaf litter. Additionally, the lateral litter drainage of broad-leaf litter is higher than that of needle-leaf litter, with the difference in leaf litter ISC decreasing with increasing flow paths.

Multi-time scale variability of rainfall erosivity and erosivity density in the karst region of southern China, 1960-2017

Dayun Zhu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the rainfall erosivity in the karst region of southern China at different spatial and temporal scales, revealing significant regional differences and seasonal variations. The findings showed an increasing trend in rainfall erosivity over the past few decades. The variation characteristics of erosivity density were found to closely correlate with rainfall erosivity.

Identifying optimal ridge practices under different rainfall types on runoff and soil loss from sloping farmland in a humid subtropical region of Southern China

Haijin Zheng et al.

Summary: The relationship between different rainfall types and soil erosion is complex, yet ridge practices have been shown to reduce runoff and soil loss in intense and normal rainfall events. Choosing appropriate ridge practices according to rainfall types can have a positive impact on soil and water conservation, with more significant effects observed during intense and normal rainfall events.

Effect of rainfall intensity and duration on soil erosion on slopes with different microrelief patterns

Longshan Zhao et al.

Summary: The study examined how rainfall intensity and duration impact the effectiveness of tillage-induced surface microrelief (TSM) in controlling soil erosion. Results showed that both depressions and mounds (DM) and troughs and ridges (TR) of TSM delayed runoff initiation and reduced runoff and sediment benefits (RRB and SRB) decreased with increasing rainfall intensity, duration, and slope. However, DM and TR were effective at controlling soil loss when rainfall intensity was below 90 mm/h and duration was shorter than 60 min. In high-intensity or long-duration rainfall, sediment from DM and TR was higher than that from smooth surfaces (SS), highlighting the need for further assessment of TSM effectiveness in reducing soil erosion under varying climatic conditions.
