Application of cross cables for the flutter stability of a long-span suspension bridge during erection

Haojun Tang et al.

Summary: Long-span suspension bridges have more flexible dynamic characteristics and worse flutter performance during erection. The aerodynamic optimization may improve the flutter performance but is expensive or difficult to achieve. Therefore, practical structural countermeasures need to be designed to improve the dynamic characteristics and flutter stability of long-span suspension bridges during erection.

The influence of gap- and chord-widths for multi-box girders: Superposition of flat plate flutter derivatives and section model tests

Michael Styrk Andersen et al.

Summary: A two dimensional model based on Theodorsen's flat plate theory is developed to approximate the aeroelastic effects on an arbitrary multi-box bridge girder. The model is compared with wind tunnel test results, showing reasonable agreement in predicting flutter derivatives and aerodynamic damping. The model overestimates the critical flutter wind speed for the present sections but provides a useful approximation for flutter derivatives.

Effects of end condition and aspect ratio on vortex-induced vibration of a 5:1 rectangular cylinder

Chaoqun Wang et al.

Summary: A series of wind tunnel tests were conducted to examine the effects of aspect ratio and end condition on the vortex-induced vibration of a rectangular cylinder. The results indicated that the aspect ratio had a significant impact on the vibration amplitudes, while the end condition and vibration had little effect on the length of the interference region.

Sparse Gaussian process regression for multi-step ahead forecasting of wind gusts combining numerical weather predictions and on-site measurements

Hao Wang et al.

Summary: Accurate forecasting of wind gusts is crucial for various applications. This study proposes a method that combines numerical weather prediction data and on-site measurements using a sparse Gaussian process regression model to improve forecasting accuracy. The method adapts to local changes in wind speed by incorporating historical measurements and ECMWF data. Results show that the proposed method outperforms other models in both short-term and long-term forecasting accuracy.

Buffeting response of a suspension bridge based on the 2D rational function approximation model for self-excited forces

Niccolo Barni et al.

Summary: In the last thirty years, the impact of slow variation of the angle of attack caused by atmospheric turbulence on the buffeting response of long-span suspension bridges has been a popular research topic in wind engineering. This paper incorporates a recently developed 2D RFA model for self-excited forces into a stochastic time-variant state-space framework to assess the nonlinear buffeting response of a suspension bridge. The results emphasize the significant impact of considering time-variant self-excited forces on the bridge's buffeting response and flutter stability.

Probabilistic vortex-induced vibration occurrence prediction of the twin-box girder for long-span cable-stayed bridges based on wind tunnel tests

Baixue Ge et al.

Summary: This paper presents an approach to predict the occurrence of vortex-induced vibration (VIV) using the decision tree method. Wind tunnel tests were conducted to investigate the effects of different parameters on VIV performance. The application of aerodynamic countermeasures (ACMs) to suppress VIV and the cost-benefit analysis of ACMs application were also studied.

Investigation on aerodynamic force nonlinear evolution for a central-slotted box girder under torsional vortex-induced vibration

Shengyuan Liu et al.

Summary: Central-slotted box girders are widely used in long-span bridges for their advantageous flutter stability, but their aerodynamic characteristics during VIV show nonlinear evolutionary features. Wind-induced pressures contribute to the VEF during VIV, with downstream and upstream boxes showing opposite correlations with VEF. The central slot in the girder enhances VEF and explains why VIV effects are stronger in central-slotted box girders compared to streamlined girders.

Vortex-excited force evolutionary characteristics of split three-box girder bridges during vortex-induced vibration

Fengfan Yang et al.

Summary: The study of aerodynamic behaviors and VIV inducement in split box girders reveals nonlinear phenomena during the VIV process, and explains the evolutionary characteristics of VIV. Additionally, the research indicates that the mean and RMS values of global VEF are mainly controlled by upstream and downstream boxes, with the increase in RMS values being the main cause of VIV.

The Effects of Aerodynamic Interference on the Aerodynamic Characteristics of a Twin-Box Girder

Buchen Wu et al.

Summary: The aerodynamic characteristics of a twin-box girder are significantly influenced by the interferences of a leading body-height grid and a leading circular cylinder in turbulent incoming flow. Different aerodynamic forces, including pressure distribution, mean forces, and fluctuating forces, are compared with those of bare deck to investigate the relationship between aerodynamic characteristics and incoming flow characteristics. The experimental results show that at high Reynolds numbers, fluctuating forces are mainly impacted by turbulence intensity, while at low Reynolds numbers, mean forces change significantly with turbulence intensity.

Case study of three-dimensional aeroelastic effect on critical flutter wind speed of long-span bridges

Ting-ting Ma et al.

Summary: The three-dimensional (3-D) aeroelastic effect has a significant impact on the critical flutter wind speeds of long-span bridges, potentially causing a relative deviation of over 30%. Numerical analysis shows that the 3-D structural effect and the effect of additional static wind angle of attack have a positive but weak influence on the aeroelastic effect, while experimental results demonstrate a more significant impact. Factors such as spatial correlation and amplitude-dependency of aerodynamic forces may also play a crucial role in the 3-D aeroelastic effect.
