Performance enhancement and emission reduction of a diesel engine fueled with different biodiesel-diesel blending fuel based on the multi-parameter optimization theory

Zhaoxia Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of biodiesel-diesel blends and pure diesel fuel on the performance and emission characteristics of a diesel engine, and simulates the fuel combustion process using a 3D model and an improved chemical kinetics mechanism. The results show that high intake pressure and oxygen content in biodiesel enhance performance and emission characteristics, while increasing NO emission. On the other hand, exhaust gas recirculation effectively reduces NOx emission. By optimizing the engine using an orthogonal principal component method, the NOx mass fraction is reduced by 78.6% and engine power is decreased by 5.60%.

Numerical and experimental evaluation on the pooled effect of waste cooking oil biodiesel/diesel blends and exhaust gas recirculation in a twin-cylinder diesel engine

Dhinesh Balasubramanian et al.

Summary: With the increasing global concern on diesel engine exhaust emissions, biofuels serve as a better alternative for compression ignition engines, but may lead to increased nitrogen oxide emissions which are harmful to human health. Research found that B20 blend fuel is the most effective in reducing emissions, particularly with a maximum reduction of unburned hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide, smoke, and carbon dioxide emissions. Increasing exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rates can effectively reduce NOx emissions but may result in higher emissions of other pollutants.
