A discrete fiber network finite element model of arterial elastin network considering inter-fiber crosslinking property and density

Xunjie Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of inter-fiber crosslinks in determining the mechanical properties of fibrous networks. A model of arterial elastin network is developed to study the contribution of inter-fiber crosslinking properties and density to the mechanics and fiber kinematics of the network. The results suggest that inter-fiber crosslinking properties are important to the mechanics and fiber kinematics of the ECM network.

The contribution of mechanical interactions to the constitutive modeling of fiber-reinforced elastomers

M. R. Mansouri et al.

Summary: A unified invariant-base constitutive model, named Matrix-Fiber-Interaction (MFI) model, is proposed and verified for the modeling of hyperelastic fiber-reinforced materials, showing high predictive capability for composites with different material anisotropy. The model allows measuring distinct contributions of the matrix, fiber, and mechanical interactions, highlighting the importance of mechanical interaction potential in the modeling of single-layer composites. The use of the MFI model improves the prediction quality and shows the effect of mechanical interaction potential for more complicated structures in simulation results.

Viscoelastic characterization of human descending thoracic aortas under cyclic load

Giulio Franchini et al.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize the nonlinear viscoelastic properties of ex-vivo human descending thoracic aortas by measuring hysteresis loops of physiological amplitude under harmonic strain. The results suggest the necessity of characterizing the viscoelastic material properties of the aorta under physiological conditions, as well as the introduction of improved models that take into account the influence of initial pre-stretch and amplitude of the cyclic load.
