MicroFE models of porcine vertebrae with induced bone focal lesions: Validation of predicted displacements with digital volume correlation

Marco Palanca et al.

Summary: The study validated the predictions of micro finite element models for local displacement of intact and metastatic vertebrae using experimental Digital Volume Correlation measurements. Results showed that simplified models can predict complex displacement fields in the elastic regime with high reliability, but more complex nonlinear models should be implemented for regions with high deformation beyond yield point.

Nonlinear micro finite element models based on digital volume correlation measurements predict early microdamage in newly formed bone

Marta Pena Fernandez et al.

Summary: Bone regeneration in critical-sized defects is a clinical challenge. Nonlinear micro finite element models can predict the biomechanical strength and microdamage onset in newly formed bone. Experimental validation and analysis reveal that microdamage occurs at low strains.

Damage tolerance and toughness of elderly human femora

Saulo Martelli et al.

Summary: Analysis of microstructural deformation and fracture behavior of elderly femora revealed that cortical elastic instability promotes bone fracture behavior, enhancing load bearing capacity, toughness, and damage tolerance. These findings will contribute to the advancement of current methods for predicting hip fragility.

Prediction of the Inelastic Behaviour of Radius Segments: Damage-based Nonlinear Micro Finite Element Simulation vs Pistoia Criterion

Monika Stipsitz et al.

Summary: The study compared the Pistoia criterion (PC) and nonlinear finite element analyses in predicting the failure load of distal radius segments. The results showed that both PC and nonlinear simulations could predict the experimental failure load well, with the PC tending to overestimate the failure load. An optimized PC (oPC) was proposed, which calibrated the volume of overstressed tissue using experimental data.
