Interfacial thermal resistance: Past, present, and future

Jie Chen et al.

Summary: Interfacial thermal resistance (ITR) is a major obstacle for heat transfer between materials, and understanding it is crucial for efficient heat dissipation in electronic and photonic devices, batteries, etc. This comprehensive review examines ITR, focusing on theoretical, computational, and experimental developments over the past 30 years. It covers fundamental theories, computational methods, and experimental tools for probing ITR, as well as challenges and opportunities in studying nanoscale and atomic scale interfaces.

Effect of carbon content on electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties of porous SiC ceramics with B4C and C additives

Jeong-Ah Yeom et al.

Summary: The electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties of porous SiC ceramics can be controlled by adjusting the C content and sintering temperature. Within a certain range, increasing C content and sintering temperature can decrease the electrical resistivity and increase the thermal conductivity and flexural strength. The porosity of porous SiC ceramics can be independent of the thermal conductivity and flexural strength by controlling C content and sintering temperature.

Intrinsic microstructures of silica-bonded porous nano-SiC ceramics

Rohit Malik et al.

Summary: Porous SiC ceramics with a core-shell structure were fabricated by sintering nano-SiC powder-carbon black compacts in air. During sintering, oxidation of SiC particles led to the formation of a SiO2 shell, while low-temperature phase transformation and precipitation of non-graphitic carbons were also observed.

Effects of initial particle size on mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties of porous SiC ceramics

Shalini Rajpoot et al.

Summary: The mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties of porous SiC ceramics can be independently tuned by selecting the appropriate starting particle size and sintering atmosphere. In the porosity range of 40% to 54%, the compressive strength and thermal conductivity of porous SiC ceramics increased as the porosity increased, contrary to the general trend. Additionally, the electrical conductivity of porous SiC ceramics sintered in N-2 atmosphere was significantly higher compared to those sintered in Ar atmosphere due to N doping in the PCS-derived beta-SiC.

Summary: In this study, oxide-bonded porous SiC ceramic filter supports were prepared and their material properties and structure characteristics were investigated. Materials processed by the mullite bonding technique exhibited higher strength and elastic modulus at a similar porosity level. Spray coating method was applied for preparation of oxidation-bonded SiC filtration layer on the porous SiC support compacts.

Influence of sintering atmosphere and BN additives on microstructure and properties of porous SiC ceramics

Shynar Kultayeva et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of BN content in porous SiC ceramics on their electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties in N2 and Ar atmospheres. It was found that the electrical resistivity was mainly controlled by the sintering atmosphere, while the thermal conductivity and flexural strength were more influenced by porosity and necking area changes between SiC grains.

Effects of dopants on electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties of porous SiC ceramics

Shynar Kultayeva et al.

Summary: The study found that doping significantly affects the properties of porous SiC ceramics, with electrical resistivity strongly influenced by doping while thermal and mechanical properties primarily dependent on the necking area between grains. Results show that the electrical conductivity of porous SiC ceramics can be successfully tuned independently of the thermal conductivity through suitable doping.

Low thermal conductivity in porous SiC-SiO2-Al2O3-TiO2 ceramics induced by multiphase thermal resistance

Shalini Rajpoot et al.

Summary: Introducing multiple heterogeneous interfaces in ceramics can increase thermal resistance efficiently. The novel porous SSAT ceramics exhibited significantly lower thermal conductivity compared to porous monolithic SiC, SiO2, Al2O3, and TiO2 ceramics at an equivalent porosity, with the lowest thermal conductivity achieved at 74% porosity being 0.059 W/(m.K). The specific compressive strength value of the porous SSAT ceramics at 74% porosity was 3.2 MPa cm(3)/g.
