Thermally-driven morphogenesis of niobium nanoparticles as witnessed by in-situ x-ray scattering

Tereza Kosutova et al.

Summary: Highly porous structures consisting of niobium nanoparticles (Nb NPs) were prepared using magnetron sputtering and inert gas aggregation method. The morphology of these nanoparticles evolves thermally, with the structure transitioning from amorphous to crystalline with the increase in temperature. Annealing above 600 degrees C causes the coalescence of nanoparticles into large structures.

Carbon-Doped TiNb2O7 Suppresses Amorphization-Induced Capacity Fading

Woowon Chung et al.

Summary: The limited capacity of graphite anodes in high-performance batteries has sparked interest in alternative materials. Titanium niobium oxide (TNO) shows great potential as a next-generation anode material due to its high capacity, but its electrochemical behavior is not yet well understood. This study reveals that the structural weakness of TNO affects its long-term cycling stability, with capacity fading caused by amorphization and increased impedance. Carbon doping in TNO effectively suppresses impedance increase, offering a possible remedy to the stability issue.

Simulated discharge overpotential distributions for sintered electrode batteries in rechargeable coin cell form factors

Chen Cai et al.

Summary: Sintered electrode lithium-ion batteries have excellent ion transport performance and are suitable for making thick electrodes. Simulation analysis shows that as the thickness of the battery increases, the main contribution of overpotential shifts from interfacial to ionic, and using a higher conductivity electrolyte can significantly increase the total capacity of the battery at high discharge rates.

Qin Zhang et al.

Summary: The internet of things (IoT) has seen rapid progress in recent years, and the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) technology based on the triboelectrification effect and electrostatic induction shows great potential in various fields. This review proposes a concept of the TENG-based human body IoT system, which focuses on energy harvesting, sensing, and interfacing. The review provides a comprehensive overview of TENGs in terms of energy harvesting configurations and materials, wearable and implantable sensors for human motion monitoring, and TENG-based human-body interfacing with external electronics. The development trend, suitable materials, and future research directions of TENGs are also discussed.

Quantifying Negative Effects of Carbon-Binder Networks from Electrochemical Performance of Porous Li-Ion Electrodes

Aashutosh Mistry et al.

Summary: This study systematically characterized the effects of the carbon-binder network on electrode performance by analyzing measured responses using macrohomogeneous models for electrodes with different carbon-binder content, thickness, and porosity but with identical materials. The research found that the impact of the carbon-binder network is more severe than previously thought, even at low content, causing a decrease in reaction area and an increase in ion transport resistance.

Pore Microstructure Impacts on Lithium Ion Transport and Rate Capability of Thick Sintered Electrodes

Ziyang Nie et al.

Summary: Increasing electrode thickness is one route to improve the energy density of lithium-ion battery cells, but restricted Li+ transport in the electrolyte phase through the porous microstructure of thick electrodes limits high current densities and rates of charge/discharge. This study explores processing routes to mitigate transport restrictions and shows that templating the electrode microstructure can significantly improve electrochemical cell properties, especially in situations where ion transport limitations are the rate-limiting step.
