A Systematic Review and Correlational Meta-Analysis of Factors Associated With Resilience of Normally Aging, Community-Living Older Adults

Summary: This study employed a meta-analytical approach to explore the factors associated with resilience in community-living older adults. The findings revealed significant associations between personal and contextual factors and resilience, with factors related to psychological and physical well-being and access to/quality of social support being associated with higher resilience, while factors indicating poorer psychological well-being and social challenges were associated with lower resilience.

Maintenance of high quality of life as an indicator of resilience during COVID-19 social distancing among community-dwelling older adults in Finland

Summary: This study found that better stress-coping ability and absence of loneliness increased the odds of maintaining high quality of life among older individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic, regardless of perceived restrictiveness of social distancing recommendations. Higher walking speed predicted constant high quality of life only among those who perceived restrictions, while living arrangement did not predict constant high quality of life.

Trajectory and Predictors of Mental Health Symptoms and Wellbeing in Newly Admitted Nursing Home Residents

Summary: This study found high rates of depression and anxiety among newly admitted nursing home residents. Factors such as low self-rated health and medical comorbidity predicted poor wellbeing at baseline, while higher perceived control in relocation and engagement in meaningful activities were associated with better outcomes post-admission.

Predictors of resilience in older adults with lower limb osteoarthritis and persistent severe pain

Summary: This study aims to explore resilience and its predictors in older adults with lower limb osteoarthritis (LLOA) and persistent severe pain. The results show that only a few patients with LLOA and persistent severe pain exhibit good physical functioning, while about half show good mental or social functioning. The predictors of resilience differ across the different domains of functioning.

The Association Between Possible Stressors and Mood Outcomes in Older Residents of Long-Term Care Facilities

Summary: This study aimed to identify stressors that have the strongest relationship with mood outcomes in older residents of long-term care facilities in the Netherlands. Major life stressors and conflicts with other care recipients and/or staff were found to be most strongly associated with mood outcomes. Multiple stressors had a stronger impact on mood outcomes than single stressors.

Defining Resilience in Older People: Does a Subjective Definition of Stressor Work?

Summary: The study indicates that self-reported major health events (srMHE) can be used to identify and evaluate resilience in elderly individuals, in addition to complementing the standard functional assessments. Compared to the control group, the resilient group showed lower mortality rates and minimal changes in activities of daily living scores.

Social Connection in Long-Term Care Homes: A Scoping Review of Published Research on the Mental Health Impacts and Potential Strategies During COVID-19

Summary: This study aimed to summarize research literature on the impact of social connection on mental health outcomes among LTC residents and identify strategies to help build and maintain social connection during COVID-19. A total of 133 studies were included, highlighting 12 strategies informed by observational and intervention studies. The findings emphasize the importance of social connection for better mental health outcomes in LTC residents, especially during the challenging circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic.
