Frailty and risk of re-hospitalisation and mortality for aged care residents following a fall injury hospitalisation

Rebecca Mitchell et al.

Summary: Frailty plays an important role in predicting the risk of re-hospitalisation for aged care residents hospitalized for fall injuries, particularly for those with intermediate or high frailty levels, aged 70-79 or 80-89, with multiple comorbidities, hip fractures, and complex healthcare needs. Frailty screening could help identify individuals at higher risk of re-hospitalisation after a fall injury.

Social isolation, loneliness and functional disability in Chinese older women and men: a longitudinal study

Lizhi Guo et al.

Summary: This longitudinal study in China found a significant association between social isolation and functional disability over 4 years among women, but not men. Loneliness did not show a significant association with disability. This expands our understanding of the link between social relationships and functional status in non-Western populations.

The longitudinal effect of sensory loss on depression among Chinese older adults

Tian Xie et al.

Summary: The study examined the longitudinal relationship between sensory loss and depression among Chinese older adults. Vision loss and dual sensory loss were significantly associated with depression, while hearing loss was not. Targeted mental health intervention programs should be delivered to individuals with vision loss or dual sensory loss.

Longitudinal Impact of Frailty States and Sleep Duration on Subsequent Depressive Symptoms of Older Adults

Huiying Liu et al.

Summary: Baseline and transitions in frailty states were significantly associated with higher subsequent levels of depressive symptoms. Short sleep duration significantly moderated the effects of baseline or transitions of frailty on subsequent depressive symptoms. Targeted interventions could be implemented to improve sleep quality for prefrail and frail older adults.
