Double Lamellar Morphologies and Odd-Even Effects in Two- and Three-Dimensional N,N′-bis(n-alkyl)-naphthalenediimide Materials

Andreas T. Rosch et al.

Summary: The study presents a novel class of alkylated NDIs for the precise functionalization of HOPG with double lamellar morphologies, showing the unexpected disturbance of odd-even effect in the self-assembled monolayers. The results suggest that increasing the length of the alkyl spacer enhances the conformational freedom of molecules while maintaining a double lamellar morphology.

Symmetry-Driven Formation of Chiral Boroxine-Based Organometallic Oligomers on Ag(001)

Amelia Dominguez-Celorrio et al.

Summary: Researchers demonstrated enantiomeric induction in products during the stage of covalent bonding, stemming from the competing point symmetries of the Ag(001)-supporting surface and the reaction products. High-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy revealed the prochiral structural character of the resulting oligomer and its impact over the spatial distribution of the electronic molecular states.

Topology Selectivity in On-Surface Dehydrogenative Coupling Reaction: Dendritic Structure versus Porous Graphene Nanoribbon

Jianmin Huang et al.

Summary: Selective control of the topology of low-dimensional covalent organic nanostructures in on-surface synthesis has been achieved by tuning the thermal annealing procedure on the Cu(111) surface. Self-assembly enhances the formation of dendritic structures, but the chaotic chirality of dimeric products and hindrance from dense molecular islands make it difficult to fabricate high-quality porous two-dimensional nanostructures. In contrast, direct deposition of TBPB molecules on a hot surface leads to the formation of ordered porous graphene nanoribbons and nanoflakes.

Initiating Ullmann-like coupling of Br2Py by a semimetal surface

Jinping Hu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the self-assembly of 2,7-dibromopyrene (Br2Py) and the well-controllable dehalogenation reaction of Br2Py on the Bi(111)-Ag substrate using a combination of STM and DFT. It reveals that the pristine bismuth layer supported on the silver substrate can initiate Ullmann-like coupling in a desired manner by getting alloyed with Ag atoms underneath, while no side products have been discovered.

Visualizing and Understanding Ordered Surface Phases during the Ullmann Coupling Reaction

Tedros A. Balema et al.

Summary: The century-old copper metal-catalyzed Ullmann coupling reaction has regained interest in the nanoscience community for on-surface C-C coupling based self-assembly of extended 2D structures. Experiments have shown that the reaction proceeds via an organometallic intermediate composed of a removed Cu surface atom. Comparing a series of substituted bromobenzene reactants revealed that the 2D packing density and structure depend strongly on the functionality of the substituents.

Identifying the convergent reaction path from predesigned assembled structures: Dissymmetrical dehalogenation of Br2Py on Ag(111)

Jinping Hu et al.

Summary: The study provides a comprehensive elucidation of surface Ullmann coupling of 2,7-dibromopyrene on Ag(111), revealing unique reaction paths, diverse assembled architectures, and a stepwise annealing process. It demonstrates that metal coordinated and halogen bonding motifs, as well as surface adatoms and dissociated Br atoms, play crucial roles in the coupling reactions. Additionally, it shows that weak intermolecular interactions in assembled nanostructures are immediately suppressed by strong covalent bonding during reactions.

On-Surface Synthesis of Thiophene-Containing Large-Sized Organometallic Macrocycles on the Ag(111) Surface

Xin Zhang et al.

Summary: On-surface synthesis is a promising method for fabricating macromolecular nanostructures, with macrocycles being of significant interest due to their tunable topology-dependent properties. This study successfully synthesized large-sized organometallic macrocycles on the Ag(111) surface using thiophene-containing molecules as precursors. By controlling the reaction pathway, the 18-membered macrocycle was produced as the dominant product among all cyclic configurations.
