Visualizing molecular weights differences in supramolecular polymers

Qingyun Li et al.

Summary: Issues of molecular weight determination are critical in the development of supramolecular polymer chemistry, as there is often no simple correlation between optical performance and number-average molecular weight. This study reports an anion-responsive supramolecular polymer that exhibits monotonic changes in fluorescence color as a function of molecular weight. The anion-responsive nature of the system allows for regulation of supramolecular polymerization and monitoring of changes in molecular weight.

A Strategy Based on Aggregation-Induced Ratiometric Emission to Differentiate Molecular Weight of Supramolecular Polymers

Hui Liu et al.

Summary: This study establishes a relationship between fluorescence properties and molecular weight, allowing for the visual differentiation of supramolecular polymer molecular weight. It is also discovered that fluorescence color can be regulated by introducing a competitive molecule.

Real-Time Polymer Viscosity-Catalytic Activity Relationships on the Microscale

Or Eivgi et al.

Summary: Polymer growth induces physical changes to catalyst microenvironments, which can affect the viscosity and chemical activity. By utilizing imaging techniques, the spatial heterogeneities in microviscosities and chemical activities can be observed, revealing the significance of these variations in the polymerization process.

Monitoring the Formation of Polymer Nanoparticles with Fluorescent Molecular Rotors

Sascha Schmitt et al.

Summary: We present an experimental approach to studying the kinetics of polymer nanoparticle formation using molecular rotor molecules as fluorescence probes. The evolution of the local environment in the nanoparticles and their size can be simultaneously monitored by combining fluorescence lifetime analysis and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy. The method was applied to two different nanoparticle preparation methods and three stages of nanoparticle formation process were identified. The study reveals significant heterogeneities in the final nanoparticles and provides insights into the characteristics and structural evolution of nanoparticles.
