Metal-Organic Network-Forming Glasses

Nattapol Ma et al.

Summary: The crystal-liquid-glass phase transition in coordination polymers and metal-organic frameworks offers opportunities for the development of a new class of amorphous materials. Rational design concepts can be used to fine-tune the desired properties. This review discusses the current achievements in understanding the anomalous phase transitions in CPs/MOFs and explores the criteria for classifying CP/MOF glasses and the strategies to obtain a glassy state.

Principles of melting in hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite and polymorphic ABX3 structures

Bikash Kumar Shaw et al.

Summary: Four novel hybrid organic-inorganic structures containing dicyanamide are reported, and the thermal behavior of nine different perovskite and non-perovskite compounds is analyzed. The relationship between structure and properties is investigated by varying the organic and transition metal cations. It is observed that increasing the size of the organic cation leads to a decrease in melting point and an increase in entropy change. The melting behavior is consistent with different metal replacements, with Co < Fe < Mn. Most of the melts partially recrystallize upon cooling, but glasses can be formed by decomposing a small amount of organic linker.

Reversible Crystal-Glass Transition in a Metal Halide Perovskite

Akash Singh et al.

Summary: By structurally tailoring a 2D MHP with bulky chiral organic cations, an unusual confluence of exceptionally low melting temperature (175°C) and inhibited crystallization is achieved. This chiral MHP can be melt-quenched into a stable glassy state, otherwise inhibited in analogous racemic MHPs. The facile and reversible switching between glassy and crystalline states in the chiral MHP presents new opportunities for applications such as nonvolatile memory, optical communication, and neuromorphic computing.

Network-Forming Liquids from Metal-Bis(acetamide) Frameworks with Low Melting Temperatures

Mengtan Liu et al.

Summary: Molten phases of metal-organic networks offer exciting opportunities for using coordination chemistry principles to access liquids and glasses with unique and tunable structures and properties. General thermodynamic strategies provide increased enthalpic and entropic driving force for reversible, low-temperature melting transitions in extended coordination solids, illustrated through a systematic study of bis(acetamide)-based networks with record-low melting temperatures. Weak coordination bonds, conformationally flexible bridging ligands, and weak electrostatic interactions contribute to the low melting temperatures of these compounds, reducing enthalpy and increasing entropy of fusion.

Glass Dynamics Deep in the Energy Landscape

Mark D. Ediger et al.

Summary: When a liquid is cooled, progress down the energy landscape is arrested near the glass transition temperature T-g. Techniques such as observing diffusion, deposition, imaging, and optical excitation have allowed experiments to probe deeper into the energy landscape. This has led to access to ultrastable, low energy glasses that were difficult to reach before.

Uncovering Phase Change Memory Energy Limits by Sub-Nanosecond Probing of Power Dissipation Dynamics

Keren Stern et al.

Summary: Phase change memory (PCM) is a leading candidate for neuromorphic hardware and storage class memory, but faces challenges in energy and power consumption due to the need for self-heating during reset. This study demonstrates a significant reduction in reset energy by minimizing pulse width and achieving thermal confinement during short pulses. The improved programming scheme lowers reset energy density to below 0.1 nJ mu m(-2), indicating potential for more energy-efficient neuromorphic hardware and future data storage technology.
