Deep embedded clustering of coral reef bioacousticsa)

Emma Ozanich et al.

Summary: In this study, deep clustering techniques were utilized to distinguish between fish pulse calls and whale songs in a coral reef soundscape. Results showed that deep embedded clustering (DEC) and Gaussian mixture models (GMM) achieved high accuracy, while conventional clustering methods had lower accuracy. DEC demonstrated the highest accuracy on a small dataset.

Sound in occupied open-plan offices: Objective metrics with a review of historical perspectives

Manuj Yadav et al.

Summary: Based on measurements and analysis of the sound environment in 43 offices, the study found that the sound level in open-plan offices (OPOs) is related to the number of workstations, with larger offices experiencing less auditory distraction. Over historical trends, OPOs have become quieter.

Speech and noise levels measured in occupied K-12 classrooms

Lily M. Wang et al.

Summary: This study collected sound level data and impulse responses in classrooms, finding that 74% of classrooms met reverberation time standards. Different methods were used to estimate signal-to-noise ratios, with k-means clustering showing more accurate results. The study also revealed that speech occurred frequently in classrooms, with variations across grade levels.

Unsupervised analysis of background noise sources in active officesa)

Domenico De Salvio et al.

Summary: Background noise in open-plan offices affects workers' comfort and productivity, with human noise often neglected. This paper proposes methods based on machine-learning techniques to identify human and mechanical noise sources, validating their robustness and reliability. Algorithms successfully match expected shapes of human speech and mechanical noise tendencies.

Unsupervised Deep Clustering of Seismic Data: Monitoring the Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica

William F. Jenkins et al.

Summary: Advances in machine learning techniques and deep clustering methods were used to automatically identify and analyze seismic data from the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica. The study identified different classes of seismic signals and found that seismic activity was highest during the 2016 El Nino summer, showing associations with seasonal changes and tidal activity.

Semi-Supervised Source Localization in Reverberant Environments With Deep Generative Modeling

Michael J. Bianco et al.

Summary: In reverberant environments, localization remains challenging. Supervised learning approaches have shown promise, but lack labels in such scenarios. A semi-supervised learning method, VAE-SSL, is proposed to address this issue by using deep generative modeling. This approach outperforms conventional methods and fully supervised CNNs in label-limited scenarios.
