Barriers to Colorectal Cancer Screening in US Immigrants: A Scoping Review

Beyond Resettlement: Sociocultural Factors Influencing Breast and Colorectal Cancer Screening Among Afghan Refugee Women

Hafifa Siddiq et al.

Summary: The longer immigrants and refugees reside in the USA, the higher the risk of developing chronic diseases, such as breast and colorectal cancer. However, they are less likely to use preventive health services, compared to US-born individuals. A focused ethnography study with Afghan refugee women aged 50 and older found that fear of cancer, pre-migration experiences, family involvement, provider recommendation, and provider gender concordance influenced women's cancer screening behaviors. The study also revealed that recent mammogram or colonoscopy recipients described empowerment factors such as support from providers, family members, and prayers. As refugee women continue to age, clinicians should consider utilizing multi-level strategies, including family-centered and faith-based approaches, to promote preventive screening behaviors.

Summary: The study identified barriers to timely colorectal cancer screening, especially colonoscopies, among Russian-speaking individuals in New York City. The barriers included individual, communal, and structural issues, as well as distinctive barriers related to culture and experiences under the Soviet system. Interventions suggested by the research, such as more education and more effective provider recommendations, have the potential to reduce these barriers.

A Qualitative Analysis of Barriers to Colorectal Cancer Screening among Korean Americans

Summary: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer among Korean Americans, but CRC screening rates are lower in this population compared to the general US population. Barriers to screening include misconceptions about lifestyle, attitudes towards cancer, lack of awareness of screening benefits, high barriers to testing, and lack of health insurance. Interventions to improve screening rates should focus on increasing awareness of CRC risks, promoting the benefits of screening, reducing barriers to testing, and improving clinical communication.

Culturally-adapted behavioral intervention to improve colorectal cancer screening uptake among foreign-born South Asians in New Jersey: the Desi Sehat trial

Summary: The study developed a culturally-targeted intervention called Desi Sehat for foreign-born South Asians focusing on CRC screening, with high acceptance rate and attendance. Four months after the intervention, CRC screening uptake increased by 30%, knowledge significantly improved, and worries and barriers related to CRC screening decreased significantly. Future research should focus on improving recruitment and retention, possibly implementing a randomized control design.

A Population Health Equity Approach Reveals Persisting Disparities in Colorectal Cancer Screening in New York City South Asian Communities

Summary: This study found that South Asians in New York City face challenges in CRC screening, mainly related to socio-cultural and structural factors. Physician referral was the most cited facilitator for screening, and culturally and linguistically adapted education and information were seen as helpful in overcoming these challenges.

Psychosocial Correlates of Experience and Intention to Receive Colorectal Cancer Screening: A Cross-Sectional Study Among East African Men in the US

Summary: The study found that men up-to-date with CRC screening had less emotional concerns but more distress and lower resiliency compared to men not up-to-date. Up-to-date men also showed a stronger intention to undergo CRC screening. Perceived risk, trust in the medical system, and PTSD symptoms were significantly associated with intention to undergo CRC screening.
