Nonlinear ultrasonic guided waves-Principles for nondestructive evaluation

Cliff J. Lissenden

Summary: Research on the use of nonlinear ultrasonic guided waves for nondestructive evaluation is rapidly expanding due to their potential benefits for early detection of material degradation. The development of inspection strategies is complicated by the complexity of physical principles, limited effective solutions, and the challenging measurement of weak nonlinearity. The Tutorial focuses on the physical principles of nonlinear ultrasonic guided waves, internal resonance conditions, and applications in detecting material degradation, with a new result on energy transfer simulation presented.

Internally resonant guided waves arising from quadratic classical nonlinearities with damping

Kosuke Kanda et al.

Summary: The study investigates the propagation-distance dependence of nonlinear guided waves, considering damping effects and internal resonance. Numerical results reveal that with detuning, amplitudes cyclically increase and decrease with propagation distance, while without detuning, amplitudes converge to stable values. The presence of damping effects attenuates both amplitudes, limiting the distance resonance waves can propagate.
