A Unified High-Order Semianalytical Model and Numerical Simulation for Bistable Polymer Composite Structures

Min Sun et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a unified semianalytical model based on nonlinear theory to predict the deformation and stability of bistable polymer composite structures. The higher-order theoretical model is extended for improved accuracy with lower computational cost. The main factors affecting stability characteristics are determined through comparison of different-order models.

Nonlinear dynamics of bistable composite cantilever shells: An experimental and modelling study

Matteo Brunetti et al.

Summary: The nonlinear dynamics of cantilever bistable shells with asymmetric stable configurations and their energy harvesting capabilities are investigated. Experimental and numerical studies are conducted to analyze the resonance scenarios and develop a reduced order model. A double-well quintic oscillator is proposed to capture the observed behavior, and the global dynamics including regular and chaotic regimes are described.

Effect of different geometrically nonlinear strain measures on the static nonlinear response of isotropic and composite shells with constant curvature

A. Pagani et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effectiveness of various geometrically nonlinear strain approximations in the refined shell formulations based on the Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF), such as the von Kármán strains, and solves geometrically nonlinear equations using the Newton-Raphson method. Test cases include shells subjected to pinched loadings, combined flexure and compression, and post-buckling problems, demonstrating the necessity of performing full geometrically nonlinear analysis considering full Green-Lagrange strains when displacements are significant and compressive loads are applied.

An analysis for snap-through behavior of bi-stable hybrid symmetric laminate with cantilever boundary

Diankun Pan et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on studying the snap-through behavior of a family of bi-stable plates constructed by hybrid symmetric laminates with a cantilever boundary. The results show that lay-up design and length are important parameters that affect the characteristics of this bi-stable laminate, and also reveal the nonlinear structural behavior of the structure.

Snap-through of bistable variable stiffness laminates using MFC actuators

P. M. Anilkumar et al.

Summary: Unsymmetric composite laminates exhibit multiple stable equilibrium shapes due to residual thermal stresses. MFC actuators are used to trigger snap-through, but high voltage input is required. Variable Stiffness laminates offer a larger design space and the ability to reduce actuator size.

Nonlinear flutter of tapered and skewed cantilevered plates with curvilinear fiber paths

Mohammad Rahmanian et al.

Summary: The study investigates the aeroelastic stability of tapered/skew variable stiffness composite cantilevered plates at flutter and post-flutter regions. By continuously altering the fiber angles, the variable stiffness behavior is achieved, and flutter speed and bifurcation diagrams are obtained under two different fiber path functions. The study aims to determine the effects of variable stiffness parameters on nonlinear behavior and find the best fiber path for improved flutter characteristics in supersonic flow.

Continuous Tow Steering Around an Elliptical Cutout in a Composite Panel

Giovanni Zucco et al.

Summary: Cutouts in composite panels can lead to stress or strain concentrations, potentially reducing load-carrying capacity. Steering tows around cutouts using advanced techniques can alleviate such problems. Results show that a steered configuration improves buckling performance by 26% compared to straight-fiber configurations, with larger stress and strain concentrations in straight-fiber orientations under both tensile and compression loads.

Transient deformation and curvature evolution during the snap-through of a bistable laminate under asymmetric point load

Vishrut Deshpande et al.

Summary: This study focuses on investigating the snap-through behavior and complex deformation of bistable carbon fiber composites under asymmetric, localized point loading conditions. Three distinct snap-through behaviors were observed depending on the point load location, and the initiation and propagation of a curvature inversion zone played a significant role in determining these characteristics. The study also explored the feasibility of using an extended analytical model of classical lamination theory to qualitatively reproduce the observed snap-through behaviors.

Bistable characteristics of hybrid composite laminates embedded with bimetallic strips

Zheng Zhang et al.

Summary: A novel bistable hybrid composite laminate embedded with bimetallic strips was designed, combining stable-state characteristics with temperature-sensing characteristics. A contactless method deforms the bimetallic strip through the temperature field to drive the bistable laminate and control curvature. The new laminates have different curvatures in different stable states, and can be easily driven by changing ambient temperature.
