Soil contamination and health risk assessment from heavy metals exposure near mining area in Bac Kan province, Vietnam

Thanh Son Tran et al.

Summary: Mining activities in Vietnam have led to potential heavy metals contamination in the surrounding areas, with As and Pb concentrations exceeding the Vietnam standard for residential soil. Pollution indices indicate that Pb and As are the major contaminants near the Pb-Zn and Au mines. Statistical analysis suggests that the pollution sources near the Pb-Zn mine are a combination of anthropogenic and geogenic sources, while health risk assessment shows children are at higher risk than adults in both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk.

Soil contamination with cadmium and potential risk around various mines in China during 2000-2020

Summary: Cadmium (Cd) pollution in mining areas is a significant challenge for soil environment management in China. This study examined the temporal and spatial variations of Cd concentrations in contaminated soil around metal mines in China from 2002 to 2020 and found a strong association between Cd concentration and mining area type. The research also highlighted the ecological and health risks posed by Cd pollution in mining areas, with some regions showing high non-carcinogenic risk. The findings provide valuable insights for the priority management of contaminated soil in mining areas.

Junxian Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanism of Cd sorption by silkworm excrement organic fertilizer (SEOF) and the effect of SEOF on Cd immobilization in Cd-contaminated soil. The results showed that SEOF had a high adsorption capacity for Cd and a similar adsorption mechanism compared to swine manure organic fertilizer (SMOF). The application of SEOF and SMOF reduced soil exchangeable Cd content and the Cd content in rice, with SEOF being more effective than SMOF.

Summary: The traditional assessment of farmland environmental quality has focused on soil heavy metals and ignored agricultural produce safety. This study improved a comprehensive assessment method to evaluate the pollution level of heavy metals in the soil-crop system in Shenyang, China. The results showed that heavy metals exceeded the background values in the soil, with approximately 28.28% of points showing pollution and rice-soil points being particularly affected.

Effect of multiple heavy metals pollution to bacterial diversity and community structure in farmland soils

Chuanzhang Li et al.

Summary: The study revealed that heavy metal concentrations and pH significantly influenced the structure of bacterial communities in soil, with different levels of heavy metal pollution leading to varying richness and diversity levels. Certain bacterial communities showed high resistance to low pH and high heavy metal pollution levels, while others were more abundant in alkaline soils. Additionally, alkaline soils had lower concentrations of Cd, Pb, and Zn compared to acidic soils, reducing the impact of heavy metals on bacterial community diversity and structure.

Summary: This study investigated the concentration characteristics and influencing factors of heavy metals in rice grains and corresponding soils from karst areas in Guangxi, China. The results showed that the proportion of karstic soil samples with heavy metal concentrations exceeding standard risk screening values was higher than that of surface soils in China. Cadmium and arsenic were found to be the most enriched heavy metals in the soils, leading to a proposed threshold for safe utilization and risk control of cadmium in karstic soils in China.

Bioaccumulation and risk assessment of heavy metals in soil-crop systems in Liujiang karst area, Southwestern China

Summary: The study evaluated the bioaccumulation and health risk of heavy metals in soil-crop systems in Liujiang karst regions. The results showed higher levels of Cu, Cr, Cd, As, and Zn in rice soils compared to sugarcane soils, with Cd and Cr being the main pollutants in sugarcane soils. Both crops tended to take up Cd more effectively, with rice grains exhibiting a higher accumulation capacity of heavy metals in the edible part than sugarcane. Due to As and Cd exposure through rice consumption, non-carcinogenic risks are likely to occur in Liujiang residents.
