Onset of comorbidities and flare patterns within pre-existing morbidity clusters in people with gout: 5-year primary care cohort study

Ram Bajpai et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the onset of comorbidities and pattern of flares in patients with gout, categorized into baseline comorbidity clusters. The results showed that the occurrence of new comorbidities varied among different baseline clusters, and patients experienced multiple flares over a period of time. Therefore, clinicians should be attentive to the development of new comorbidities in patients with gout.

Alcohol-Induced Oxidative Stress and the Role of Antioxidants in Alcohol Use Disorder: A Systematic Review

Evangelia Eirini Tsermpini et al.

Summary: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a prevalent and disabling disorder with various comorbidities. The relationship between alcohol metabolism and oxidative stress is not fully understood. Studies have shown that oxidative stress impacts AUD through genetics, alcohol metabolism, inflammation, and neurodegeneration.

Potential role for age as a modulator of oral nitrate reductase activity

Khandaker Ahtesham Ahmed et al.

Summary: The study found a relationship between oral microbiome and oral nitrate reductase (NR) activity, with age being a potential factor affecting NR activity. Using a protocol that measured initial NR activity, results showed age-related differences in NR activity and suggested age may modulate responsiveness to dietary nitrate.

Interleukin-1β in Multifactorial Hypertension: Inflammation, Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell and Extracellular Matrix Remodeling, and Non-Coding RNA Regulation

Elaina Melton et al.

Summary: Interleukins play a significant role in the pathogenesis of hypertension, including systemic arterial hypertension, pulmonary hypertension, and gestational hypertension. Research has focused on the regulation of IL-1 beta in inflammation, vascular smooth muscle cell function, and extracellular remodeling, as well as the function of non-coding RNAs in regulating IL-1 beta and its associated proteins in hypertension.

Pathogenesis of Higher Blood Pressure and Worse Renal Function in Salt-Sensitive Hypertension

Yuguang Chu et al.

Summary: This study found that patients with salt-sensitive hypertension have worse renal function and higher blood pressure. Differences in growth factors and pathways, including activated PI3K-AKT pathway and high MCSFR, may account for this phenomenon. Factors such as EG-VEGF, VEGFR2, VEGFR3, and VEGF-D are also related to elevated blood pressure.
