Instrumentation development and testing of a wind turbine blade for sub-scale wake studies

A. Hassanzadeh et al.

Summary: This study manufactured one-meter-long blades and installed them on a turbine. By using wind tunnel testing and sensors, the blade loading and flow field were characterized, and the behavior of the wake was studied.

Effects of inflow boundary layer on the wake of a radially non-uniform porous disk

Anas Abdulrahim et al.

Summary: This study investigates the wake characteristics of a porous disk with radially non-uniform porosity in the inflow boundary layer, showing that the velocity profiles become skewed and asymmetrical in the wake due to the inflow wind shear. Turbulent properties such as turbulent kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress levels also show asymmetrical distributions around the disk centerline. The wake centerline shifts downwards in the inflow shear, contrasting observations in real wind turbine wakes where the wake actually lifts up.

The effects of free-stream turbulence on the performance of a model wind turbine

Stefano Gambuzza et al.

Summary: The study shows that power output of wind turbines is significantly influenced by the scale and intensity of inflow turbulence, while thrust is barely affected. Torque fluctuations are dominated by free-stream turbulence scales, with thrust frequency response being unaffected by high-frequency components in the inflow.

Wind turbine wake influence on the mixing of relative humidity quantified through wind tunnel experiments

Martin Obligado et al.

Summary: This experimental study investigates the impact of a scaled wind turbine on the mixing of moist air, finding that the presence of the rotor affects the flow structure and humidity and temperature stratifications. The effect is influenced by both the streamwise distance and the Reynolds number of the flow.

Experimental investigation of an active slat for airfoil load alleviation

P. Singh et al.

Summary: This study discusses the utilization of an active slat concept to reduce turbulence induced fluctuating loads on an airfoil, with wind tunnel tests confirming its effectiveness. By actively moving the trailing edge of the slat, the load fluctuations on the airfoil are successfully mitigated.

An analytical model of wind-farm blockage

A. Segalini

Summary: Wind-farm blockage is investigated using an analytical model based on the linearized Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation. The model allows for superposition methods and linearly combines the induction zones of each turbine present in the farm to assess blockage in velocity and power for wind farms with different layouts and wind directions. The model is validated against wind tunnel experiments and provides insight into the induction region upstream of single wind turbines and clusters of turbines.
