Relations between the Raman spectra and molecular structure of selected carotenoids: DFT study of α-carotene, β-carotene, γ-carotene and lycopene

V. S. Novikov et al.

Summary: Using density functional theory (DFT), the study analyzed the structures and Raman spectra of trans-isomers of different carotenoids, finding that the position of the C=C stretching band is mainly determined by the number of conjugated C=C bonds and decreases with increased conjugation length. The C-C stretching band shifts with conjugation length or mass of end groups, and the presence of side CH3 groups affects the intensity and position of the bands.

The Diversity of Linear Conjugated Polyenes and Colours in Nature: Raman Spectroscopy as a Diagnostic Tool

Lenize F. Maia et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the linear conjugated polyenes and their application in biomolecules, with Raman spectroscopy being used for molecular characterization. Conjugated polyenes are responsible for the yellow, orange, red and purple natural colors observed in flora and fauna, and are also a key target for astrobiology, with Rama spectroscopy being discussed as a main analytical tool for their detection extra-terrestrially.

Raman imaging reveals in-situ microchemistry of cuticle and epidermis of spruce needles

Nadia Sasani et al.

Summary: This study explored the native cuticle and epidermal layer of Norway spruce needles using Raman imaging and polarization experiments. Results showed a waxy, crystalline layer on top and strong signals of coumaric acid and flavonoids in the lipidic amorphous cuticle beneath. Non-negative matrix factorization provided the purest component spectra and promoted band assignments, enhancing our understanding of plant cuticle structure and composition.

Structure, isomerization and dimerization processes of naringenin flavonoids

Ana Gonzalez Moreno et al.

Summary: The study presents theoretical and experimental results on the molecular structure and reactivity of plant flavonoids naringenin chalcone and naringenin. The analysis includes the cyclization-isomerization reaction and the formation of dimers. Results suggest that the presence of H-bonded water networks is crucial for energetically suitable cyclization, and propose a mechanism for dimer formation in different environments.

Influence of extraction solvents on the polyphenol contents, compositions, and antioxidant capacities of fig (Ficus carica L.) seeds

Emine Nakilcioglu-Tas et al.

Summary: The study found that extracts from fig seeds using 50% aqueous methanol exhibited the highest polyphenol content and antioxidant capacity. The levels of chlorogenic acid, (-)-epicatechin, and rutin in the fig seed extracts were highest when extracted with 50% aqueous methanol.
