On the origin and significance of composite particles in mudstones: Examples from the Cenomanian Dunvegan Formation

Zhiyang Li et al.

Summary: The study revealed the origin and distribution of mud-dominated composite particles in marine mudstones along the depositional profile of the Dunvegan Formation. The recognition of these particles showed a richer petrographic composition than the grain size of their component minerals would suggest, calling for a critical reappraisal of the composition and actual grain size of mudstones in general.

The polyphase rifting and inversion of the Danube Basin revised

Michal Sujan et al.

Summary: The research re-evaluates the evolutionary history of the Danube Basin, including pre-rift, syn-rift, post-rift, and inversion stages. It shows that various factors such as tectonic processes, subsidence history, and biostratigraphic data have contributed to the formation of the basin.

Precise dating of middle to late Villafranchian mammalian paleofaunae from the Upper Allier River valley (French Massif Central) using U-Pb geochronology on volcanic zircons

Jean-Louis Paquette et al.

Summary: The French Massif Central is a unique area in Europe where lower Pleistocene fossil deposits are linked to significant volcanic activity. By using U/Pb geochronology on zircon, researchers have precisely dated five Villafranchian fossil sites in the region and found that the MNQ18 stage lasted for about 200,000 years.

Reconstruction of an extreme flood hydrograph and morphodynamics of a meander bend in a high-peak discharge variability river (Powder River, USA)

Massimiliano Ghinassi et al.

Summary: Recent advancements in modern technologies have improved the understanding of morphodynamic processes associated with large-scale floods. However, the relationship between flood discharge and in-channel sedimentation processes remains unresolved. By studying the Powder River in Montana, USA, this research investigates the connections between flood discharge and point-bar sedimentation processes. The integrated approach adopted in this study provides a basis for advancing paleoflood hydrology beyond estimating peak discharges to estimating paleoflood hydrographs.

Which is the best 9Be carrier for 10Be/9Be accelerator mass spectrometry?

Silke Merchel et al.

Summary: Commercial Be-9 solutions for chemical preparation in accelerator mass spectrometry may contain Be-10 at varying levels, and it is recommended to choose solutions from ACR or LGC for most Earth science applications. Buying a larger quantity of the same production batch and testing them before use is advisable due to variations in Be-10/Be-9 levels in solutions from different manufacturers.
